Is there a simple way for a player to figure out how to play in more NCGA tournaments ? I’m 50 yrs old with an 11 hdcp and belong to the club at CInnebar Hills, so i cant play in the 5.5 hdcp and under tournaments. Ive played in the public links once. I keep searching the NCGA website and I may be a little slow here, but it is not intuatively obvious how to get involved in more NCGA tournaments.

You are eligible for all individual events that your index allows you to enter. Since you are not a senior you can enter all the events that qualifying is required at your course such as the Zone in your area, Four-Ball Net and Net Amateur. If you go into our website under Rules and Competitions - under Attention Tournament Players you will find all of our events, you can also look on our tournament calendar for NCGA points events. Please contact your club tournament chair for NCGA Club tournaments.

Note: Since Cinnabar Hills is a public facility you are eligible for the public links tournament.

I like the idea of moving the California State Senior to late in the season, but the tentative dates look like they may be a problem. Since the US Senior AM Medal play portion starts on Saturday the 20th, most player would like to play 2 (or more) practice rounds which means travel by the 17th latest. That is the last day of the California Senior.

    Paul,

I agree with you it is tough to follow what is available and not. The layout should have a column with age and hcap, thiswould make it easier to review and apply.

  5. Ralph Caggiano writes:

I have to agree with Paul and Colin. I think the problem of knowing what you qualify to play could be a simple fix of just making an identifiable tab on the website instead of having to search around until you stumble across it. This is the link that will give you information for some tournaments: http://www.ncga.org/rules-competitions/atttourneyplayers/

The best resource is the blue book for all of your tournament questions.

  6. Anthony Hunter writes:

This page is extremely helpful and (as an Associate Club president) I appreciate the organized layout. It would be wonderful if you could include a column that stated the entry fee (which shouldn’t take up much space). Thanks.

  7. Roger Val writes:

Colin and Ralph - I appreciate the input on the calendar. We tried something different this year and are always open to suggestions. The entry fees could be added once the budget gets approved which is usually done at the December board meeting.

Frank - When we swithch the dates of the NCGA Senior Four-Ball and the CGA State Senior we had no choice but to put the State in the same week as the US Senior Am with only one or two days of travel in between. Starting in 2009 we will be able to work with the calendar so there will not be any conflicts in the future. This is the same style of conflict that we have every year with the NCGA Am and the US AM.

  8. colin campbell writes:

    Roger,

What if you simply added a column showing handicap index required i.e.

  9. Jim Diederich writes:

It would be very helpful if you had an interactive web page that allowed a golfer to enter his/her profile such as age, index, location, miles willing to travel, weekend vs. weekday, etc. and a list of NCGA tournaments that fit that profile would be displayed with all of the relevant data for each. It is frustrating to have to dig through all of the possible tournaments to find one that might be of interest. If you are new to NCGA or have never played in one of their events and don’t
play with others who do, this type of service might encourage you to participate in NCGA events.

  10. Scott Pierson writes:

When will the calendar be published for the NCGA associate qualifiers and deadlines?
If I remember correctly the “printed” copies will not be mailed out next year.
I am trying to plan our leagues’ spring tournaments around the deadlines for the early qualifiers.

    Thank you,

  11. Scott Pierson writes:

My apologies….Looks like it is listed above and I went right past it…..Well at least the deadlines are later next year….This year was tough for qualifying.

    Thank you

Is there any way that the NCGA and the SCGA can come together so that the champions of the events can be exempt into the others championships. A common theme in the SCGA’s Hall of Fame inductees was that they had won the triple crown state Am, SCGA Am and NCGA AM. It would be nice to have that opportunity to do this but neither organization exempts players into each others events. The time constraints of qualifying keeps N ca players in the North and S ca players in the South.

  13. ed burke writes:

What Tees do senior competitors with handicaps circa 10, play from?

  14. Patrick Burda writes:

    I like Tim’s idea.

Also, Roger, do you think the NCGA will ever have a Mid-Am Championship?

  15. Jud Spencer writes:

Where’s the Valley Am at? Is the Masters still at Spyglass?

  16. Jimmy Becker writes:

Patrick - The idea of a Mid-Am Championship has been brought up in the past and it continues to be discussed at the committee level.

Ed - The answer to your question depends on the course you are playing at. For NCGA events, we typically use yardages ranging from 6000 to 6400 yards to account for weather, course topography, etc.

Jud - The Valley Amateur Championship will be held at Winchester CC in Aubrun on September 8 & 9, 2008, with qualifying to be held on July 24. The Master Division Championship will be held on July 7 & 8, 2008 at Spyglass Hill.

  17. Jim Knoll writes:

I think Tim’s idea makes a lot of sense also.
When will the entire 2008 schedule be available (online)?
And why is there an age ceiling for the Masters? I’ve asked this question many times and never received a complete answer — outside of Juniors, I know of no other divisions or events with age ceilings!

  18. Jimmy Becker writes:

    Jim,

The issue with the SCGA/NCGA champions receiving exemptions for championships is based on eligibility requirements. In the NCGA case, you must be a member of the NCGA to participate in NCGA events. We do have a few SCGA members who are also NCGA members participate in our events, but the idea of combined exemptions would have to be discussed at the Committee level.

The 2008 schedule is on our website with dates and some sites. Online registration and that schedule should be up sometime in mid-January.

In regards to the Master Division, without going into a long history about it, it was created to give that age bracket a scratch championship where they did not have to compete with the seniors and the younger players.

    Hey Guys,
Where is the NCGA senior in 2008?
    Thanks,

    Tom,

The NCGA Senior Championship will be held at the Saddle Creek Resort May 5-6, 2008. Here is a link to the NCGA 2008 Schedule http://www.ncga.org/_pdf/08schedule.pdf.

  22. Jim Knoll writes:

Jimmy, the NCGA/SCGA champions gaining exemptions into each other’s championships still makes sense to me; we’re talking about adding only one exempt spot for each event (and they shouldn’t have to be members of both assocaitions to participate)– what an honor it would be to represent your section in the other’s championship!
And I know their is long history connected to the Masters and reluctantly I understand your response. If the NCGA ever creates a Mid-Am event, do you put an age ceiling on it (25 - 39)? I don’t think so! Us graybeards would like to have the opportunity to play in all these events (especially the ones @ Spyglass).

  23. J. B. Carter writes:

Someone told me they heard the zone tournaments are not going to be held at Spyglass & Poppy Hills in 2008. Has there been a change and if so, on what course(s) will it be contested. Thanks

    J. B.

The zones are scheduled to be played at Spy and Poppy.

  25. Topper Owen writes:

The Calendar does not list many of the venues for various championships; e.g where is the Senior or Valley Senior being contested?

The US Open Sectional is said to be June 2, but this is a Saturday and the SCGA says it is on June 4 at Lake Merced, which seems more likely. Error?

  26. Jimmy Becker writes:

    Topper,

June 2 is on a Monday and that is the correct date for U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying at Lake Merced. The 2008 NCGA Senior Championship is being held at the Saddle Creek Resort in May and the Senior Valley Amateur Championship is being held at Winchester CC in Auburn in early September.

When will the “rest” of the tournaments be added to the 2008 calendar (i.e. The Alameda Commuters, San Francisco City, Vallejo City, Contra Costa, etc.) The non-NCGA operated tournaments? Right now, if I go to the Rules and Competitions page, it only shows the 2007 stuff.

    Justin,

The 2008 calendar should be up some time in early January with the non-NCGA events.

Please advise me if the four man team Sacramento zone chaipionship is 8-25 & 26 as per your 2008 Sch. or I’m I not seeing the correct date?

I am looking for the 2008 tournament calender that lists the actual dates of the Sacramento zone tournaments that will be played at Poppy and Spyglass. Last year it was in July during the Holiday. I’m hoping this isn’t the case this year as this is a busy time for families. Please let me know, thanks, Don.

  35. Greg Olson writes:

As a 56-year-old, who competed reasonably well in this year’s US MidAm, I see no down-side in giving the over 54’s a shot at qualifying for the NCGA Masters. Like Jim Knoll, I feel if you’re good enough to qualify, why not?

  36. Rob Faxon writes:

When is the date for the Maxfli Champions event (in the Sacramento area)? Last year it was April 16/17, but don’t see anything listed yet.
    Thanks.

  37. Jimmy Becker writes:

    Al,

The best answer is that is just the way it is. Most amateur associations start their senior division at age 55 while the Champions Tour starts at age 50.
Don, the Sacramento Zone Championship is March 24 & 25.
Rob, the Maxfli is April 14-15 at Rancho Murieta.

How about a column that indicates when registration opens? There are some events that this is especially critical as the fill up fast. Is there somewhere on the web that I can find the open registration dates?

Online registration for NCGA events opens January 14th at 8 AM. The registration link will be active at that point and can be found under “Tournament Registration” on our homepage.

Have the dates for the NCGA Handicap Certification Seminars been set yet? When can we expect to see the dates being announced.

    Thank you,
    Michael J. Battaion

  41. Jim Cowan writes:

    Michael,
The schedule of 2008 NCGA Handicap Certifition Seminars will be forwarded to all clubs in late February. A copy of the 2008-2011 NCGA Handicap Manual will be included in the mailing. The bottom line on Certification is that credit from 2002-2007 will be carried over to 2008 so long as the individual that completed the seminar is still with the club. At some point in the 2008-2011 time period, each club will need to send someone again (or complete an NCGA on-line seminar that will be completed by late spring). Again, it doesn’t have to be accomplished in 2008, just within the 2008-2011 time period. Thanks again. Jim Cowan

I am playing in the East Sacramento Zone tourney March 31-April 1. Are there plans to have some tee time available at Poppy Hills for a practice round Sunday March 30th prior to the tournament? If so how do I register my team for one of those times?
    Thank you.
