CARMEL VALLEY – Junior golfers from around Northern California battled it out on the links in the 2nd Annual NCGA/JGANC Northern California Junior Players’ Championship at Rancho Canada.
Five worthy champions emerged in each of the five age divisions. Players competed in a modified Stableford scoring format, where points were awarded as follows: 5 points for eagle; 3 points for birdie; 2 points for par; 1 point for bogey and no points for double bogey or more.
A nail-biting four-way-tie emerged in the Boys’ overall championship at 75 points. The result was a playoff between Matt Williams of San Jose, Nick Sako of Menlo Park, Ben Geyer of Arbuckle and Dash Lindsell of Burlingame.
Sako was victorious in claiming the overall title after firing a 4-under-par round to finish at 75 points. The Menlo Park resident commented after the round that while this was his first big win of the year, he felt confident coming into the tournament. “I didn’t have my A-game but still managed to hit enough fairways and greens.” Sako also played well recently at the U.S. Junior Qualifying at Stanford GC, he fired 141 to make the first-alternate spot.
Kortnie Maxoutopoulis of Pleasanton captured the girls’ overall title by a comfortable four-strokes. Maxoutopoulis posted a final-round one-over-par to finish at 69 points for the tournament.
Ben Geyer won the Boys’ 16-17 flight while overnight leader Matt Williams of San Jose finished in second and Lindsell claimed the third-place honor after posting a two-under-par round for the day.
In the Girls’ 15-17 division, Haley Andreas of Pacific Grove carded a seven-over-par 65 to take the championship title, while Spencer Heller of Turlock and Madchen Ly of Clovis tied one stroke back at 64. Heller then suceeded in a playoff to secure second-place while Madchen Ly finished in third.
Kraig McLeod of Pebble Beach dominated the Boys’ 14-15 division with an even-par 73 total. McLeod held of John Louie of Salinas who shot even-par today to finish at 70 points. Four strokes back, Tyler Leeworthy of Galt carded 66 points to claim third-place.
In the Girls’ 12-14 flight, Livermore’s Marguerite Swearingen held onto the overnight lead to secure the championship. Swearingen fired a final-round seven-over-par, 29 to finish at 62 points and eight strokes clear of runner-up finisher Natalie Bodnar of Pleasanton. Meanwhile, Alexandra Sborov of Pleasanton nabbed third with 52 points.
Hayden Sheih of Fremont began the day tied in second place in the Boys’ 12-13 flight. Sheih captured the championship with a final-round score of 31 points to finish at 13-over-par 59. Danville’s Conner Blick carded 29 points to claim the runner-up spot by a comfortable four-strokes over Christopher Petefish of Danville who finished at 53 points.
