LIVERMORE – The NCGA Associate Club Net Amateur Championship at Poppy Ridge produced three champions in each of the three handicap divisions: the President’s flight for players with handicap indexes of 10.2 and below; the Director’s flight for 10.3-16.3 and the Secretary’s flight for players with handicaps of 16.4 and above.
Brian Fitzgerald of Vintage Park GC captured the President’s flight with a final-round 64. The seven-handicap golfer was net four-under-par on each nine to finish at 13-under-par and secure the win by two strokes.
Dan Bruckner of eClub South Bay held on to second place with a final round three-under-par 69, while Tom Kintigh of PB Hackers followed up his first-round net 66 with a 69 to finish in third at nine-under-par 135.
In the Director’s flight, Rishi Prasad of Fiji-US GC came from two-strokes back to claim the title by a single stroke. Prasad fired a net three-under-par 69 in the final round to finish at eight-under-par 136.
Arlo Santos of DLS Greens posted a 66 to nab second place at seven-under-par 137 and Synergy’s Tim Robinson took third with 68-70, 138.
The Cinderella story of the tournament came from the Secretary’s flight. Eventual champion Andy Norhdoff fired a net 58 in the first round and followed it up with a 69 to secure the title by two strokes over the field. The 17-handicap player had never entered a golf tournament before and the first round (gross 78) beat his best ever round of golf by a full seven strokes. The Bushwood GC member was ecstatic, “Everything just went right,” he commented after the round.
Francis Lee of Nor Cal GC also went low with a final-round net 59 to charge up the leaderboard and take second place. Lee’s round included 10 birdies and eagles on the 14th and 16th holes to finish at 13-under-par 129. Meanwhile, Ronald Watson of Amigo GC and Diane Rasch of Ladies of the Vineyard GC tied for third with 11-under-par 133.
Over 480 players from NCGA associate clubs (clubs without real estate) throughout Northern California attempted to qualify for the championship earlier in the season.
