2009 Team Champions: Cardinal Newman HS
CHICO, CA – Martin Trainer birdied the first playoff hole to nab the 2009 Northern California High School Boys’ Individual Championship, while Cardinal Newman HS captured the team title at Butte Creek.
Trainer, a senior at Gunn HS, three-putted the 18th green of the day to post a two-under-par 70 and force a playoff with Palma’s Matt Ogden, Chico’s Kurt Kitayama and Nick Sako of Menlo-Atherton HS. Trainer then went on to birdie the first playoff hole, “I hit a wedge into the green real close and then made the putt,” commented the 18-year-old who was medalist at the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying in 2007.
After a runner-up finish last year, Cardinal Newman HS charged back to claim the team title by three strokes. The team of Chris Gregus, Alex Reno, Alex Revelle, Corey Robello, Charlie Welch and Alex Johnson fired a team score of 13-over-par 373.
Aided by consistent rounds of one-under-par 71 by Chris Gregus and even-par 72 by Alex Reno, the team edged out Carmel HS’s team of Mickey Mahoney, Colton Bollinger, Oliver Jaget, Kraig McLeod, Luke Vivolo and Chris Jasper, who finished runner-up at 16-over-par 376.
Jesuit HS’s team of Chris Macasaet, John Catlin, Ryan Irish, Harrison Murk, John Byers and Cameron Skreden came in third at 20-over-par 380.
Mark Leong of De La Salle (71) and Jessie Stephens of Pleasant Valley (72) will join Trainer, Ogden, Sako and Kitayama as individuals at the State Championships.
The top three teams qualify to play at the CIF State Championships at Poppy Hills on June 10.
