Play More for Less
The NCGA is excited to introduce a program that will save members money. Partnerships with more than 60 facilities, will help your dollar go further. We want your help naming the new program.

Bayonet GC
Present your new 2009 membership card at any of the facilities linked below to receive benefits such as discounts on green fees and merchandise, preferred tee times, free lessons and clinics and much more. Benefits and services will vary by facility. Look for NCGA signage and ask the pro shop staff what you are entitled to as an NCGA member.
The program adds to a list of member benefits that includes deep discounts at NCGA member courses Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge, members-only outings at private and resort courses, NCGA Golf subscription and hotel discounts among others.
Please post your comments and ideas on what we should name the program.
NCGA…the most important club in your bag keeps getting better!

When will the new membership cards be available?
March 10th, 2009 at 10:40 amMr. Cruz,
March 10th, 2009 at 11:21 amUnfortunately we had a bit of a delay on the member cards, but our vendor has given us a mailing date of April 7th. Membership cards should begin to arrive in members’ mailboxes shortly after that date.
Thanks,
Tom Bowden
Director of Member Relations & Development
Sounds like a good program if you can actually make it work. The stated “deep discounts” at Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge had better be substantial. The greens fee price increases over the past 5-6 years has virtually eliminated these gems as a destination for the typical member. Add to the fact that both courses are a two hour round-trip (in ideal traffic) from the South-bay hub of the San Jose area, the combined total of driving time, gas & greens fees pushes people to closer, cheaper courses.
How about the “NCGA More Greens For Less Green” program?
March 10th, 2009 at 12:01 pmI agree with Mr. Richardson. Golf green fees are getting out of site everywhere. Many are being pushed locally to lower cost courses that are already providing discounts and daily specials.
Some suggestions I have are: “Swing for the Green$” or “Swing for the Savings”.
March 10th, 2009 at 4:52 pmHow about “NCGA’s Affiliate Bailout Program” or the “Affiliate Advantage”
March 11th, 2009 at 2:26 amI signed up last October and have never received my membership card.
March 11th, 2009 at 7:03 amIn fact, my friend signed up at the same time and still has no membership card.
Billy,
March 11th, 2009 at 9:30 amPlease see my response to Mr. Cruz above. The cards will mail April 7th.
Thank you,
Tom Bowden
Director of Member Relations & Development
How about “POPPY’S PLAYER CLUB” or “POPPY PLAYERS CLUB” or “POPPY’S PLAYERS CLUB”
March 11th, 2009 at 10:24 amThe Pro Shop.
March 11th, 2009 at 10:55 amI too agree with Mr. Richardson. The cost at Poppy Hills has increased dramatically while the course condition has deteriorated. As a member of the NCGA, I’d like to fund something other than an expansion of the back-office staff. The number of programs offered (First Tee etc.) has blossomed, and some might say bravo, but I simply can’t afford your largess.
March 11th, 2009 at 12:15 pmMr. Forker and Mr. Richardson:
We appreciate your feedback. After reviewing the rates at Poppy Hills and Ridge, the largest change in the last five years is an increase of $10 to the weekend rate at Poppy Ridge. We feel these rates are very reasonable and we do our best to provide NCGA members with the best value in golf. Also, NCGA member rates have gone up only twice in 10 years, while member benefits have increased exponentially, especially in the last few years. The new program mentioned here providing benefits and discounts at golf courses in the region is the latest example.
March 11th, 2009 at 1:53 pmThank you for your continued support of the NCGA,
Tom Bowden
Some may think the Poppy Hills green fees are high, but I disagree. To play a golf course like that in that area is unbelievable. I have played some donkey tracks that are within $20 of the price you pay for Poppy Hills.
March 11th, 2009 at 6:04 pmI don’t agree with some of the comments regards to the increase in Poppy Hills rates. There isn’t a course in the bay area that would compare to Poppy Hills for the weekend NCGA rate. I’m surprised it’s as cheap as it is!
Good job on promoting NCGA and providing value for our club membership.
March 11th, 2009 at 8:24 pmA good name for such a program might be Green Savings. Meaning the green you spend is a little less and the green the shops see might just save a few jobs. Since club vendors refer to pro shops as green grass accounts… Green Savings works both ways.
March 11th, 2009 at 9:42 pmMr. Bowden. I am a 50 rounds per year golfer. I am the president of an Associate club. I believe the pricing for an NCGA member at Poppy Hills is very fair. I also feel that the course conditions have not deteriorated. Try to golf a similar course on the Monterey Peninsula for under $75. Bayonette/Black Horse is $115. Spyglass or Spanish Bay? Are you kidding? In regards to the pricing at Poppy Ridge, the current pricing is too high for the area. There are many courses of similar quality that are offering substatial discounts due to the economy. I would suggest you work on a better discount program for Poppy Ridge. I believe the additional play would offset the discounts given. I know there are members of my club that are not playing there specifically due to the cost. The new program is “better value for less cost” what’s not to like?
March 12th, 2009 at 8:59 amMr. McCarroll,
March 12th, 2009 at 9:53 amThank you for your feedback and support. You hit the nail on the head that the goal of the new program is to offer “better value for less cost”. During your defense of Poppy Hills you sited the rates at Bayonet/BlackHorse which is a wonderful course. We are very excited to have them as part of this program. To give you a sample of what this program has to offer, through this program Bayonet/BlackHorse will be offering NCGA members a $95 rate anytime that includes a cart — an excellent deal!
Also, regarding your suggestion that we examine the rates at Poppy Ridge I will definitely pass it along to the appropriate decision makers.
Thank you,
Tom Bowden
Director of Member Relations & Development
I think its funny when the NCGA says they are going to expand their discount program from the 2 Poppy courses to more than 60 and everyone starts to complain about the drive times, gas prices, etc. This program is going to give everyone discounts on courses they are already driving to and playing anyway. Shut up and golf!
March 12th, 2009 at 3:20 pmWhat about NCGA’s “Ace in the Hole” program? (It’s another term for savings)

March 12th, 2009 at 3:40 pmsince you’re no longer making a refund for the money we waste when we belong to multiple golf organizations, this new plan sounds like a winner.
how about calling it the “ncga golf stimulus plan”?

March 12th, 2009 at 3:57 pmThe NCGA Stimulus Package or Stimulus Bill
March 12th, 2009 at 3:57 pmSince it is a benefit program and you want to attract new NCGA Members, I suggest calling it what it is…NCGA Member Advantage

March 12th, 2009 at 4:09 pmHow about the NCGA “Gimme” program? The golf vernacular and “Give me more” associations are obvious enough, and the name is short and easily remembered…. Well, there’s a reason I’m not in marketing. Regards,

March 12th, 2009 at 4:14 pmI live in the East Bay and we play Poppy Ridge regularly. I think that for the quality of course the rates are fair. Just keep an eye on what Callippe is charging – they are the only real competition that is open to the general public. In terms of a name for your new program, I vote for the name proposed by Joe Arbios above – NCGA+ has a nice ring to it.
March 12th, 2009 at 4:15 pmHow about NCGA Dollar Hazards.
Graphics:
Green stake= Green Fee Discounts
Merchandise:
White stake- Out of Bounds, Minimal or no discount
Yellow stake- A cerain %
Red stake- Most/Max % Discount
Your graphics designers should have some fun with that!
March 12th, 2009 at 4:17 pmI suggest BENCGA
March 12th, 2009 at 4:18 pmI have to agree with the folks above who think Poppy Ridge is overpriced. It’s a good track, but there are plenty of good tracks in the Bay Area for less these days. The fact that Callippe costs about the same, while true, doesn’t really mean much, since Callippe is overpriced too.
March 12th, 2009 at 4:23 pmI suggest NCGA Golf Getaways…

March 12th, 2009 at 4:45 pmI think your idea of opening up more courses for the members is a great idea due to the economic situation etc…How about If you want to play you must be NCGA…
March 12th, 2009 at 4:48 pmFirst let me commend the NCGA for developing a savings program that includes other golf facilities and services. It’s clear by the comments already posted, NorCal golfers are passionate about the game. Secondly, this couldn’t have come at a better time since I suspect a VERY High percentage of us have “regular” jobs (if you’re lucky) and are being affected by the economy. That said, I agree with Mr McCarroll’s comments about Poppy Ridge. Personally, I know at least 10 fellow golfers (including myself) that have abandoned “PR” when at one time it was played on a regular basis. Although it still an awesome course, the economy has dictated other course considerations. Regards,

March 12th, 2009 at 4:51 pmI think your idea of opening up more courses for NCGA members is great. It could not come at a better time; Economy etc..How about…”If you want to play you must be NCGA”
March 12th, 2009 at 4:51 pmThe program makes us all winners.
March 12th, 2009 at 4:52 pmSo how about “Green Skins”.
Just call it “Greenies”
March 12th, 2009 at 4:54 pmI think some of us may have forgotten about the basics in life and what this country is about. Demand vs. supply – and we don’t like commis (that’s communist for the non-American readers) in this country. If you think that the rates are too high, don’t play, and if enough people share your thoughts, then prices will come down. When did we become a country of “I deserve more” rather than “I will strive for more”? Count your blessings that you are in a place and economic status that you can play golf.
March 12th, 2009 at 4:54 pmWith regards to the name, call a duck a duck – NCGA Benefits, or NCGA Affiliate.
I like the idea of green in the name say Go Green or Going Green.
March 12th, 2009 at 5:03 pmName for the bonus program:
March 12th, 2009 at 5:03 pmGOLF LINKS
A good name might be “Golden Poppy Promotions” for this new discount and benefits package. This gives it kind of a richer flavor for this new program
March 12th, 2009 at 5:03 pmIn honor of the approaching holiday, I nominate the title “$haring of the green”
March 12th, 2009 at 5:10 pmIt seems that you are getting a fair amount of feedback from NCGA MEMBERS, and why is this? Because members care! So it seems to be a given that the program should be called THE NCGA MEMBERS CARE PROGRAM. To go along with this it is ever so important for all members to do their part such as taking care of the courses, replace divots, repair ball marks etc. etc.

March 12th, 2009 at 7:51 pmNCGA’s ScoreCard
March 12th, 2009 at 7:59 pmI believe the NCGA Logo is that of a Poppy flower. You have 2 courses named Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge. How about naming the Membership program The POPPY ADVANTAGE PROGRAM ??? This name will remind people of the NCGA affiliation, further promote the 2 ‘Poppy’ golf courses, and the ‘Advantage’ word is already an established brand word relative to incentive/promotion type of offering. I think you want reinforcement of the NCGA organization from the name of the program, easy to remember, and avoid exotic names that has little linkage to NCGA.
March 12th, 2009 at 8:04 pmPossible program names…
NCGA Birdie Advantage (birdie indicating less than)
March 12th, 2009 at 8:07 pmNCGA Benie (short for benefits)
Bennies of Northern California
March 12th, 2009 at 8:45 pmIt’s really nice to see people fired up about golf. No matter the economic climate, golf should be accessible to all. I think Linda Rindt striped it when she pointed out the significance of the NCGA logo, the Poppy. Anything reasonable that employs the Poppy would be great.
How about “The PoppyPlan”, “Thanks,Poppy!” “PoppyRewards”, “Poppy Plays” or “Poppy-Doodle-Do”. You get the idea.

NCGA Players Pass
March 12th, 2009 at 9:40 pmWell, I lost my whole message after the security code was rejected. Great!
In a nutshell, the cost to play Poppy Hills is awesome. $55 for a green fee that normally costs $195 is a huge discount. You can get back what you paid in NCGA member dues in one round at Poppy Hills.
As for names:
March 12th, 2009 at 9:42 pmNCGA Play More for Less Program
NCGA Play More Pay Less Program
“Golf Stimulus Package” has got to be it in today’s world. Thx!
March 12th, 2009 at 9:42 pmI like Clyde Kennedy’s suggestion “Swing for the Green$”
March 12th, 2009 at 9:43 pmOH…I do agree that the Poppy Ridge discount could be better. When I first saw the discounted price, I thought, “compared to Poppy Hills, that sure isn’t enough to make me want to drive to Livermore. I would rather just drive to Poppy Hills instead.” I think the drive would be about the same.
However, I do appreciate what is provided. I have no complaints at all.
Cheers.
John Blenio
March 12th, 2009 at 9:46 pmMight as well just make it “$wing for the Green$” then.
But…if you are going with that, then drop the plural and just say,
“Swing for the Green.” It has the double meaning and you could create a logo with dollar bills as the putting surface, or fairway, or tee box.

March 12th, 2009 at 10:46 pmMost NCGA members have been waiting for this type of discount program from the NCGA for quite a while. Better late than never.

March 13th, 2009 at 12:32 amI propose a simple ” NCGA gem card”
March 13th, 2009 at 1:51 amor a fun “NCGA albatros pass” (like you always dream of it, now you get it!)
I would agree that these courses are beautiful and well maintained the averge golfer with todays economy problems will have a hard time paying these fees these are not twice a week courses unless your doing well in my opinion but the discounts do help I think as long as you keep it below $90 golfers will play. (Preferred discount Card)
March 13th, 2009 at 4:30 amThe current fees at Poppy Ridge (as a local course) are too high to play the course on a regular basis. It’s my understanding that Poppy Ridge is underplayed by nearly one-half that of past years. A 3-month pass similarly priced to that of the Winter Pass for NGCA members would enhance the afternoon play and bring in additional members. The currently priced passes are too expensive and require too much play to break even for the average working golfer.
March 13th, 2009 at 8:14 amNCGA MULLIGAN PROGRAM, (More for less)
March 13th, 2009 at 8:45 amThe Mulligan Advantage Card
March 13th, 2009 at 8:53 amI try to get down to Poppy Hills whenever I can and totally enjoy the course. It is a great value. My suggestions for your new member benefit program are:
NCGA VIP Rewards Program
NCGA VIP Value Program
or:
NCGA Rewards Program
NCGA Value Program
or:
NCGA Member Rewards Program
NCGA Member Value Program
Thanks for the idea of bringing additional value to NCGA members who would like to play other courses that they might not be able to afford to play.
March 13th, 2009 at 9:14 amWhile the Affiliate Program is certainly another added benefit of membership in the NCGA, I would suggest that in addition to publishing the list of Affiliate Courses, you also list the benefits and services that each has agreed to provide. The list of services, etc., does not have to be all inclusive, but, it should provide the viewer with some before the fact inkling of what they might expect should the choose to play a round of golf at one of those facilities.
As for Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge. The prices are right, the courses well maintained and the ambiance is fantastic.
March 13th, 2009 at 9:30 amMr. Freeman,
March 13th, 2009 at 9:39 amWe will be posting a complete list of the services and benefits to be offered at each course in the next few weeks.

It is very hard for young families with children to be able to afford to play the game of golf. The young generation is who you really want to get in the game. Getting teens to enjoy sports no matter which one will help them stay healthy throughout their entire lives. My suggestion for a name would be “NCGA – G.O.L.F. March 14th, 2009 at 7:37 amThank you. I do not care what you call the program, but living north of Sacramento I would like to address the people complaining about “The Poppies”. Chill people, at least you live close enough to them to play them once in awhile. I have never been able to play either one of them. I wish the NCGA could move one of them up my way because they cost no more than the better courses up here. I guarantee you I would play them, regardless of cost.

March 15th, 2009 at 3:47 amMr. Chun,
March 15th, 2009 at 3:49 amIf you have not received your membership card in time for your visit to Poppy Hills you will just need your NCGA/GHIN number handy. The staff in the pro shop will be able to verify your membership with that number. To access the Pebble Beach gate for free please print out the eRevision you receive on the 1st of every month with your index. Please note: to gain free access you must be on the tee sheet for that day.

March 15th, 2009 at 3:45 pmThis program should be named “NCGA presents ‘Golf and Beyone’”.
March 15th, 2009 at 6:05 pmSorry for the misspelling:
This program should be named: “NCGA presents ‘Golf and Beyond’”
March 15th, 2009 at 6:07 pmI suggest: “Sweet Six-Tee”
March 15th, 2009 at 7:47 pmPOPPY POTPOURRI
March 15th, 2009 at 8:19 pmThis should cover the “variety” from course to course and I assume from time to time at a given course.
How about “Setup Fore Savings Program”. I don’t know if golf has ever been a cheap activity, but the savings from taking advantage of the Pebble Beach Golf Specials @ Spanish Bay for NCGA Members more than paid for my membership, gas and food. Multiply that by four and it was a GREAT DAY at a GREAT COURSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I even played well.
March 15th, 2009 at 9:31 pmHow about Super Twilight Club, or California Twilight or Poppy Twilight?
March 15th, 2009 at 11:54 pmNumerous Courses(make)Golf Affordable

March 16th, 2009 at 9:58 amThe “On-Deck”
March 16th, 2009 at 10:38 amadvantage program.
Kudos to the NCGA for promoting the game of golf & for having two great courses. A member discount program is a great idea and very welcome in these times.
I couldn’t agree more with Mr. McCarroll above. Poppy Hills is priced correctly for a Monterrey Pennisula course.
Poppy Ridge is over priced, even for a local here in the Livermore valley. I think the proof is the number of rounds played weekday afternoons. Besides a handfull of us at twilight, the course is essentially unused. Lower the prices in the afternoon. $32 plus $12 for a cart? $30 per round including cart is the right price.
March 16th, 2009 at 1:59 pmI am lucky enough to vacation in Carmel twice a year, and I play Poppy Hills almost exclusively because of the relative bargain I receive through the NCGA. Up here in Roseville, we play courses that couldn’t hold Poppy’s “you know what” for nearly the same weekend rate. Spanish and Spyglass are awesome, but playing the hardest track on the AT&T circuit for under $100 is a no-brainer in comparison.
How about the ‘NCGA Preferred Program’…
March 16th, 2009 at 7:16 pmI like the NCGA Pathways Program mentioned above. I don’t think it should be called VIP or Club because that would imply you have to do something above and beyond just NCGA membership.
New California resident and NCGA member here and very excited at all the existing and developing benefits. As an ex-member of other golf associations this is by far the highest value.
March 17th, 2009 at 11:07 amHas anyone suggested “Savin’ o’ the Green.”
March 17th, 2009 at 4:01 pmHow about G.O.L.F. (Get Out and Leave Familiarity)?
March 18th, 2009 at 7:17 amEncouraging people to go out and try a new course?
My suggestion is: NCGA T2Greens4Less
or, NCGA T2Green Deals
or, NCGA T2Green Savings
or, NCGA T2Green Golfers $ave
March 18th, 2009 at 9:40 amHow about the “preferred lie “ club or Member’s bounce” club. I think Poppy Hills is a bargain compared to other courses in the area. Perhaps members could be given a discount on the cart fees since that would not subtract from “course” revenue
March 18th, 2009 at 2:16 pmLets call it the “Stimulus Golf Package” or the “NCGA Stimulus Plan”
March 19th, 2009 at 9:46 am“Such A Deal”
March 21st, 2009 at 8:21 amSince we are getting “second chances” with such good deals, call it
March 21st, 2009 at 8:34 am“MEMBERS MULLIGANS”!
Since you will be able to golf-4-less howabout Poppy-4-less or GolfLess.
March 21st, 2009 at 10:59 amVery simply call it the “NCGA Eagle Pass”
March 23rd, 2009 at 9:18 amThis program will allow us members increased access to other wonderful golf destinations around the area so lets call it…
NGCAccess Advantage.
March 23rd, 2009 at 1:17 pmI think the Poppy Ridge course is a bit overpriced for what you can find in the Bay Area. I think NCGA members should recieve a great deal of discounts at this course. The condition of the course is OK, not great…And you can play courses 20 min away that are in way better condition for 25-30 dollars. IE: Deer Ridge, Shadow Lakes, Roddy Ranch. Hopefully you will consider a more attractive discount for that course.
March 24th, 2009 at 9:10 pmNCGA Sweet Deal Program
March 25th, 2009 at 7:28 amNCGA Sweet Greens Program
NCGA Less is More Program
NCGA Green Day Discounts Program
NCGA Win-Win Program
NCGA Driving For Dollars Program
NCGA Big Break Program
OK, maybe one more idea won’t be too many…but how about
The NCGA Sweetspot Program…
as in “Haven’t found the sweetspot on your putter lately? We’ve found one you can’t miss– our new Sweetspot program…..” “Looking for the sweet spot on your driver? Bet you’ll find it when you play more often through our Sweetspot program.” …Hope you get the idea.
March 25th, 2009 at 11:29 amMany good suggestions
March 26th, 2009 at 8:50 amGreen Keeper is the best.
I prefer the simple and to the point approach.
March 27th, 2009 at 6:28 amNCGA GOLD CARD (we are the Golden State), or NCGA VIP GOLD CARD (to make you sound even more special)
What a bunch of whiners. Course fees are a little high but look at the quality of the course you get to play. One way to keep costs down is to go play goat tracks and cheap, not well maintained courses.
March 27th, 2009 at 3:18 pmThanks NCGA for any discount available, I’ll be taking advantage of them.
Here’s your winner: “Lollipops for Poppystops” You’re welcome.
March 28th, 2009 at 12:14 pmI like NCGA’s Fringe Benefits.
March 28th, 2009 at 12:51 pm“More Fore Less”
March 28th, 2009 at 10:30 pmPoppy Club
March 30th, 2009 at 1:08 pmMy spouse and I are avid golfers, but find the cost of golfing becoming a big expense in California. Since we are retired we do have the benefit of playing on weekdays. We consistently use the golf websites for discount rounds. When we have to play on a weekend in an event we find it to be very expensive since we are paying 2 green fees. Accordingly we hardly ever play on weekends. We just got back from Tucson and found that many of their higher end courses are really suffering and were offering discounts average 50-75% and other courses were at least 40-50%. I do not see the same in California with many courses and yet when associates play these courses during the week there are a lot of vacant tee times. I hope courses see the writing on the wall in pricing or a lot of courses will really struggle next year. They also do not offer any discounts when a couple plays. I think they should be trying to attract couples to play. I think your new program should be titled: Save Some Green.
