Play More for Less

The NCGA is excited to introduce a program that will save members money. Partnerships with more than 60 facilities, will help your dollar go further. We want your help naming the new program.

Bayonet GC

Present your new 2009 membership card at any of the  facilities linked below to receive benefits such as discounts on green fees and merchandise, preferred tee times, free lessons and clinics and much more. Benefits and services will vary by facility. Look for NCGA  signage and ask the pro shop staff what you are entitled to as an NCGA member.

The program adds to a list of member benefits that includes deep discounts at NCGA member courses Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge, members-only outings at private and resort courses, NCGA Golf subscription and hotel discounts among others.

Please post your comments and ideas on what we should name the program.

When will the new membership cards be available?

  2.

    Tom Bowden writes:

    Mr. Cruz,
Unfortunately we had a bit of a delay on the member cards, but our vendor has given us a mailing date of April 7th. Membership cards should begin to arrive in members’ mailboxes shortly after that date.
    Thanks,

  3. Al Richardson writes:

Sounds like a good program if you can actually make it work. The stated “deep discounts” at Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge had better be substantial. The greens fee price increases over the past 5-6 years has virtually eliminated these gems as a destination for the typical member. Add to the fact that both courses are a two hour round-trip (in ideal traffic) from the South-bay hub of the San Jose area, the combined total of driving time, gas & greens fees pushes people to closer, cheaper courses.

How about the “NCGA More Greens For Less Green” program?

  4. clyde kennedy writes:

I agree with Mr. Richardson. Golf green fees are getting out of site everywhere. Many are being pushed locally to lower cost courses that are already providing discounts and daily specials.

Some suggestions I have are: “Swing for the Green$” or “Swing for the Savings”.

I too agree with Mr. Richardson. The cost at Poppy Hills has increased dramatically while the course condition has deteriorated. As a member of the NCGA, I’d like to fund something other than an expansion of the back-office staff. The number of programs offered (First Tee etc.) has blossomed, and some might say bravo, but I simply can’t afford your largess.

  11.

    Tom Bowden writes:

    Mr. Forker and Mr. Richardson:

We appreciate your feedback. After reviewing the rates at Poppy Hills and Ridge, the largest change in the last five years is an increase of $10 to the weekend rate at Poppy Ridge. We feel these rates are very reasonable and we do our best to provide NCGA members with the best value in golf. Also, NCGA member rates have gone up only twice in 10 years, while member benefits have increased exponentially, especially in the last few years. The new program mentioned here providing benefits and discounts at golf courses in the region is the latest example.
Thank you for your continued support of the NCGA,
    Tom Bowden

  12. Harvey Hunter writes:

Some may think the Poppy Hills green fees are high, but I disagree. To play a golf course like that in that area is unbelievable. I have played some donkey tracks that are within $20 of the price you pay for Poppy Hills.

  13. Louis Fong writes:

I don’t agree with some of the comments regards to the increase in Poppy Hills rates. There isn’t a course in the bay area that would compare to Poppy Hills for the weekend NCGA rate. I’m surprised it’s as cheap as it is!

Good job on promoting NCGA and providing value for our club membership.

  14. Scott De Moss writes:

A good name for such a program might be Green Savings. Meaning the green you spend is a little less and the green the shops see might just save a few jobs. Since club vendors refer to pro shops as green grass accounts… Green Savings works both ways.

  15. Dave McCarroll writes:

Mr. Bowden. I am a 50 rounds per year golfer. I am the president of an Associate club. I believe the pricing for an NCGA member at Poppy Hills is very fair. I also feel that the course conditions have not deteriorated. Try to golf a similar course on the Monterey Peninsula for under $75. Bayonette/Black Horse is $115. Spyglass or Spanish Bay? Are you kidding? In regards to the pricing at Poppy Ridge, the current pricing is too high for the area. There are many courses of similar quality that are offering substatial discounts due to the economy. I would suggest you work on a better discount program for Poppy Ridge. I believe the additional play would offset the discounts given. I know there are members of my club that are not playing there specifically due to the cost. The new program is “better value for less cost” what’s not to like?

  16.

    Tom Bowden writes:

    Mr. McCarroll,
Thank you for your feedback and support. You hit the nail on the head that the goal of the new program is to offer “better value for less cost”. During your defense of Poppy Hills you sited the rates at Bayonet/BlackHorse which is a wonderful course. We are very excited to have them as part of this program. To give you a sample of what this program has to offer, through this program Bayonet/BlackHorse will be offering NCGA members a $95 rate anytime that includes a cart — an excellent deal!
Also, regarding your suggestion that we examine the rates at Poppy Ridge I will definitely pass it along to the appropriate decision makers.
    Thank you,
    Tom Bowden
Director of Member Relations & Development

  17. Sweeden McGee writes:

I think its funny when the NCGA says they are going to expand their discount program from the 2 Poppy courses to more than 60 and everyone starts to complain about the drive times, gas prices, etc. This program is going to give everyone discounts on courses they are already driving to and playing anyway. Shut up and golf!

First let me commend the NCGA for developing a savings program that includes other golf facilities and services. It’s clear by the comments already posted, NorCal golfers are passionate about the game. Secondly, this couldn’t have come at a better time since I suspect a VERY High percentage of us have “regular” jobs (if you’re lucky) and are being affected by the economy. That said, I agree with Mr McCarroll’s comments about Poppy Ridge. Personally, I know at least 10 fellow golfers (including myself) that have abandoned “PR” when at one time it was played on a regular basis. Although it still an awesome course, the economy has dictated other course considerations. Regards,

The current fees at Poppy Ridge (as a local course) are too high to play the course on a regular basis. Thank you. I do not care what you call the program, but living north of Sacramento I would like to address the people complaining about “The Poppies”. Chill people, at least you live close enough to them to play them once in awhile. I have never been able to play either one of them. I wish the NCGA could move one of them up my way because they cost no more than the better courses up here. I guarantee you I would play them, regardless of cost.

    Mr. Chun,
If you have not received your membership card in time for your visit to Poppy Hills you will just need your NCGA/GHIN number handy. The staff in the pro shop will be able to verify your membership with that number. To access the Pebble Beach gate for free please print out the eRevision you receive on the 1st of every month with your index. Please note: to gain free access you must be on the tee sheet for that day.
    Thank you.

How about “Setup Fore Savings Program”. I don’t know if golf has ever been a cheap activity, but the savings from taking advantage of the Pebble Beach Golf Specials @ Spanish Bay for NCGA Members more than paid for my membership, gas and food. Multiply that by four and it was a GREAT DAY at a GREAT COURSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I even played well.

Kudos to the NCGA for promoting the game of golf & for having two great courses. A member discount program is a great idea and very welcome in these times.

I couldn’t agree more with Mr. McCarroll above. Poppy Hills is priced correctly for a Monterrey Pennisula course.

Poppy Ridge is over priced, even for a local here in the Livermore valley. I think the proof is the number of rounds played weekday afternoons. Besides a handfull of us at twilight, the course is essentially unused. Lower the prices in the afternoon. $32 plus $12 for a cart? $30 per round including cart is the right price.

  147. David Cales writes:

I am lucky enough to vacation in Carmel twice a year, and I play Poppy Hills almost exclusively because of the relative bargain I receive through the NCGA. Up here in Roseville, we play courses that couldn’t hold Poppy’s “you know what” for nearly the same weekend rate. Spanish and Spyglass are awesome, but playing the hardest track on the AT&T circuit for under $100 is a no-brainer in comparison.

How about the ‘NCGA Preferred Program’…

  148. Brian Doxtator writes:

I like the NCGA Pathways Program mentioned above. I don’t think it should be called VIP or Club because that would imply you have to do something above and beyond just NCGA membership.

How about the “preferred lie “ club or Member’s bounce” club. I think Poppy Hills is a bargain compared to other courses in the area. Perhaps members could be given a discount on the cart fees since that would not subtract from “course” revenue

I think the Poppy Ridge course is a bit overpriced for what you can find in the Bay Area. I think NCGA members should recieve a great deal of discounts at this course. The condition of the course is OK, not great…And you can play courses 20 min away that are in way better condition for 25-30 dollars. IE: Deer Ridge, Shadow Lakes, Roddy Ranch. Hopefully you will consider a more attractive discount for that course.

My spouse and I are avid golfers, but find the cost of golfing becoming a big expense in California. Since we are retired we do have the benefit of playing on weekdays. We consistently use the golf websites for discount rounds. When we have to play on a weekend in an event we find it to be very expensive since we are paying 2 green fees. Accordingly we hardly ever play on weekends. We just got back from Tucson and found that many of their higher end courses are really suffering and were offering discounts average 50-75% and other courses were at least 40-50%. I do not see the same in California with many courses and yet when associates play these courses during the week there are a lot of vacant tee times. I hope courses see the writing on the wall in pricing or a lot of courses will really struggle next year. They also do not offer any discounts when a couple plays. I think they should be trying to attract couples to play. I think your new program should be titled: Save Some Green.
