Bob Hanna

Former NCGA Executive Director Bob Hanna passed away last weekend at age 92.

Bob Hanna

Hanna served as the NCGA’s first executive director from 1955 – 1979, retiring as associate director club liason in 1981. He was only the second employee of the Association and presided during a period that saw the NCGA involved with the construction of Spyglass Hill in the 1960s and the development of Poppy Hills in the 1970s leading to its 1986 debut.

Hanna’s zeal for the Association and its history was instrumental in the expansion of member clubs from less than 90 to more than 280 in his 26 years of service.

The era also witnessed growth in staff and member services including tournaments, handicapping – where the NCGA was the first association to utilize a computerized system – and the superintendent intern program. Hanna was succeeded by John Zoller.

The NCGA honored the Rochester, NY native and Cal-Berkeley alum by renaming the annual NCGA/NCPGA Cup Matches after him and PGA life member Lyle Wehrman. A room in the NCGA office is also named for Hanna and Zoller. He received the International Association of Golf Administrators “Distinguished Service Award” in 2002.

Hanna’s memorial service will be held at St. Angela’s in Pacific Grove at 10:30 a.m. on April 17.
