Can’t Miss Tahoe

Share/Bookmark

NCGA Golf would like your assistance in producing its next “Can’t Miss” feature on the Tahoe area. What can you tell us about your favorite places?

The section highlights the variety of destinations within Northern California, their golf courses, culture and cuisine.  We want this to be comprehensive and enlightening, so what can you tell us about Truckee and Lake Tahoe? (Note: Reno is not included).  We are looking for “off the beaten path” information that people might not know.

Questions to be answered:

Best place for a post round drink
Compelling view from a tee box
Best driving range
Restaurant recommendations
“Keep an eye on” golf courses
Unique travel experiences
Interesting hike
Or anything else quirky or different about the region

Thank you. The feature will run in the Summer edition, to be mailed in July.

Best place for a post round drink – The deck at Edgewood Tahoe
Compelling view from a tee box – There’s a bunch of them, the best would be the 13th hole at Coyote Moon, it’s a par 3.
Best driving range – Whithawk Ranch
Restaurant recommendations – Fire and Ice at the Mariott Timber Lodge is great
“Keep an eye on” golf courses – Old Brockway

When the subject of golf courses comes up, and everybody chimes in with their favorite, my response is “God put his hand down to touch the earth to create a truly extraordinary golf course – he made Edgewood”. The last three holes run right along Lake Tahoe back to the clubhouse – wow!

As a local, my views may, perhaps, differ from those of a tourist.
Tahoe City Golf Course (9 holes) is the best place for a post round drink with views of 3 to 5 holes and a “unique” atmosphere where the locals are friendly and accessible. The greens are considered some of the best in the area. A two hour round leaves plenty of time for other Tahoe activities.
Coyote Moon is the preferred 18 hole course in the area. Old Greenwood and Edgewood are great too!
The best driving range is at Old Greenwood.
Best restaurant is Wolfdales in Tahoe City. Moody’s in Truckee is also very good.
The best hike starts at DL Bliss State Park and runs along the lake to Emerald Bay State Park.
The Squaw Valley Tram provides great views with little effort.

Best place for a post round drink: Clubhouse at Old Greenwood. Great views of the finishing hole.
Compelling view from a tee box: 13 at Coyote Moon. 100 foot drop, what more is there to say?
Best driving range: Martis Camp. Numerous teeing grounds, teeing areas from the back, and an observation deck for heckling members.
Restaurant recommendations: Mamasake in the Village at Squaw. The sushi there is all-time, but at a great price.
“Keep an eye on” golf courses: Old Greenwood. Reno-Tahoe Open anyone?
Unique travel experiences: The wildlife at the course at the Resort at Squaw Creek. Adding to the amazing background views of the majestic slopes of Squaw Valley USA.
Interesting hike: 5 Lakes Trail in Alpine Meadows. Great views of Alpine
Or anything else quirky or different about the region

After a day on the course, I highly recommend Sato’s Sushi. The all you can eat sushi bar is excellent and very affordable.

My favorite place to stay and golf is “OLD GREENWOOD”.

You are treated so well! The Jack Nicholas desined golf course is amazing!!! The cabins (3 bd, 4 bath, decks, tv’s, CD & DVD player) have all the modern amenities and everytime I arrive I pop a cork, turn on the fireplace, put on a little “Nora Jones” music and look out the huge windows onto the golf course or trees. They have a very safe Kids camp (for the adults so they can play), large pool, exercise equipment, great golf clinics (Anna Sorenson is coming soon)….this gets rid of all my angst and this is GOD’S COUNTRY. It is an easy drive from Sacramento. The also have great wine prices (cheaper the Costco’s fine wines) and a great price. There are ways to get better prices on the golf course also.

If you’re looking for “near Tahoe” experience, try Apple Mountain Golf Resort in Camino. It’s on Highway 50 just an hour from South Shore. At less than half the price of Edgewood or Old Greenwood, it’s a fabulous golf experience!

In the South Lake Tahoe area I never miss a chance to play Sierra Nevada Golf Ranch, now one of the 2 courses at Genoa Lakes (sp?). Technically this is Carson City but 20 minutes from S. Lake Tahoe. On my way there from San Francisco, on Highway 50 just past Placerville, is an absolute must play at Apple Mountain Golf Course. This pristine Mountain Pine setting gets almost no play and is in perfect condition everytime. Great prices and the most unbelievable scenary. These are 2 must plays if you go to the South Lake Tahoe Area.

Best place for a post round drink: Brooks Bar and Deck, which was named one of the top 19 holes in the country by Golf digest last year.
Tee box views: the 16th or 17at Edgewood Tahoe. The 16th is tree lined with the Lake in sight at the greens and the 17th runs paralell to the Lake. Incredibly great for twilight playingm, but exceptional at any time of day.
Best driving range: Again, Edgewood Tahoe – the Lake views and the incredible way they maintain the grounds is unbeatable.
Restaurant: Edgewood Tahoe Restaurant – Lake Views, incredible food, breads baked in-house, and a resonably priced Prix Fixe seasonal menu offered. Perfect for date night.
Inique Travel Experiences: Twin Pines. A huge private home on the Lake with boat access. Steps from Edgewood to play and from Harvey’s for some late nigth play.

I’m not too much of a golfer, but my husband is. So after he’s done golfing and I’m done playing games over at Harrah’s, we usually meet for dinner at Edgewood Tahoe Restaurant- It’s our place! We love the food (He loves the steaks and I love the fish), and the view over the lake is amazing.

  16. Morgan writes:

I’ve golfed all over California, and Edgewood Tahoe’s 18th hole has by far the best view of any hole I have ever played. The hole runs parallel to the lake, and is incredibly lush and well manicured. The view of the clubhouse in the backdrop makes it the perfect final hole.

My buddies and I love playing that course because after an amazing and refreshing round of golf, we always go back to Brooks for a cocktail. The service is impeccable, with a view to match. Its the perfect atmosphere to share stories and relax after playing in the sun all day.

I am more familiar with South Lake Tahoe. (SLT)

Best place for after round drink/food: Edgewood in SLT.

Best value for golf: Lake Tahoe Golf Course on Highway 50 on way into SLT. It also has a good driving range and short game area. Easy course to walk, fun holes, and great views of the mountains, river and a variety of wildlife.

Restaurant: Mott Canyon Grill on Kingsbury grade (Nevada is nonsmoking in restaurants), Edgewood, Cafe Fiore & Evans. Red Hut for Breakfast.

Unique: Plenty of nightlife. Summer is here and the outdoor concerts at Harvey’s are a great value and alot of fun. The venue is small so every seat is pretty good. Harrahs and Horizon generally have live bands at night in the casino area.

The Adidas outlet in SLT at the Y has a ton of golf clothes for women and men at very good prices.

Has anyone checked out the Golf Courses at Incline Village?

  19. John Hejlik writes:

I live in Incline Village so some suggestions in that area.
    1. Post round drink – Lone Eagle Grille Bar at the Hyatt (on the Lake)
    2. View from the tee – #16 at Incline Championship Course from back tees. Beautiful view of the Lake. Edgewood finishing holes are also great.
    3. Restaurants – Incline – Fredricks Le Bistro, or Lone Eagle Grille.
Tahoe City – Wolfdales or Christy Hill; Truckee – Moodys or Cottonwoods.
    4. Keep an eye on GC – Mountain Course in Incline. Test your short game but not for beginners. Par 58.
    5. Interesting Travel – Kayak from North Shore down East shore to Thunderbird Lodge. Take the tour if available. Interesting North Shore history.
