PEBBLE BEACH – Matt Pinizzotto and Samantha Moyal each held onto their opening-round leads to capture NCGA Junior Amateur Championship titles at Spyglass Hill.
Matt Pinizzotto of Salinas posted a final round three-under 69 to claim his victory, leading off with three birdies on his front nine to put him in good position. The 17-year-old believed that “playing solid golf and staying pretty consistent” is what got him through this tournament. Pinizzotto has been playing in NCGA tournaments for two years now and has aspirations to continue on at the collegiate level. Pinizzotto shot under par in each of his three rounds with 71, 70, 69 for a 210 total.
Samantha Moyal of Alameda captured the Girls overall title on her first time playing Spyglass Hill. Moyal started playing golf about three years ago. Only playing in NCGA tournaments for a little over a year, the 16-year-old knew Spyglass was going to be a tough challenge. “First I tried to find the Tiger Woods video game but couldn’t. On the course I just kept listening to the other players. I paid attention to what other girls were doing and when they would say, “Nice shot,” I would try to hit it in that exact same spot,” said the champion. Moyal finished at five-over-par 149, posting rounds of 75-74. Kortnie Maxoutopoulis of Pleasanton took home second place honors, posting a strong second-round score of even-par 72. Madchen Ly of Clovis finished four strokes back from Moyal in third place.
Dylan Smith of San Francisco won the Boys 16-18 flight with 72-70-72–214. Alex Franklin of San Rafael finished second, one stroke back, and one-under-par for a total score of 215. Bryson Dechambeau of Clovis and Johnny Castles of Cupertino both took third place honors, finishing at even par, two strokes back from Smith.
Michael Decker of Pebble Beach won the Boys 14-15 flight for the second year in a row. Decker fired a 74 on his final round. Justin Marchiando of Carmel took second place, one stroke back from Decker. Andrew Buchanan of Los Altos Hills and Nicolo Galletti of Clayton finished in a close third, two strokes back from the leader.
William Brueckner of Walnut Creek won the Boys 12-13 flight with 72-76, 148. Ryan Han of Hollister finished second posting a second-round three-over 75. Justin Suh of San Jose took third place honors.
