PEBBLE BEACH – The Plumas Lake team of Richard Carter, Jesse Martynski, Ed Powell and Tom Sanchez held onto its first-round, five-stroke lead to eek out a one-stroke victory at the 43rd annual NCGA Zone Championship at Spyglass Hill. The club has now won two of the last three Zone Championships.
Plumas Lake, the North Valley Zone champions, fired a 31-under net 257 in the format that takes the best two of four scores per hole, but 25 of that 31-under total came in the first round at Poppy Hills yesterday.
The Stonetree team of Dale Banda Steve Bobus, Chris Ladd and Mark Nelson produced the low round of the day at Spyglass, a 14-under 130, but were nine shots back start the day to far back to catch the champions. Stonetree qualified via a runner-up finish in the North Bay Zone Championship in June.
The Benbow foursome of William Coffelt Jon Lefebre, James Pogue and Richard Sutherland grabbed third place (where they had begun the final round), two back of the champions. Benbow won the North Zone title in April.
The 28 foursomes that qualified for the championship either won or finished runner-up at one of 14 regional zone championships held throughout the summer at Poppy Hills and Quail Lodge GC. The majority of the nearly 400 NCGA regular clubs participate in one of the NCGA’s most popular net events.
