STEVINSON – The 3rd Annual NCGA Junior Tour Championship concluded today at Stevinson Ranch GC. Saturday’s treacherous rain gave way to clear skies for beautiful final-round play. The 36-hole stroke-play competition is the championship of three series of junior tournaments: Spring, Summer and Fall. Each series consists of five competitions. Championship entry was determined based on points acquired throughout the complete Junior Tour Series.
Nicolas Noya of South San Francisco came from three-strokes down to capture the Boys Championship Flight Tour title. Noya’s four-under 68 was the lowest score of the day. Noya posted rounds of 78,68, 146. Andrew Sirowy and Jonathan De Los Reyes tied for second, both posting 75, 75, 150 for the tournament.
Casie Cathrea of Livermore take the the Girls Championship Flight title carding 74, 73, 147. Cathrea had a powerful, final-round one-over 74 carding two birdies for the round. San Jose’s Hannah Suh took second place finishing three strokes behind the leader with 76, 74, 150. A tie for third place existed between Alameda’s Samantha Moyal and Hannah O’Sullivan (Cupertino), each finishing at 14-over 158.
Clovis’ Justin Avery moved up one place to capture the Boys’ First Flight title with a final-round 78, 163 overall. Phil English Jr. (Stockton) and Trent Nishimura (Fresno) tied for second-place honors at 23-over-par 167.
Holding on to her round-one lead, Michelle Xie claimed a victory in the Girls’ First Flight with consistent rounds of 78 and 80. Danville’s Tyler Akabane finished in second place with a final round 89 and 175 overall. Angela Liu took third-place honors with rounds of 90,93, 183.
Also announced at the conclusion of the event were players of the year awards based on overall performance during the 15-event Tour, including national tournaments and other events across California. Andrej Bevins captured the Boys’ Player of the Year award for 14-18 age group. Bevins had a strong second half of the season which enabled him to take a 442 point lead over Bryson DeChambeau going into the Junior Tour Championship. Bevins’ win solidified his top position on the points list. On the strength of her Tour championship Casie Cathrea passes Mariko Tumangan on the points list to take the Girls’ Player of the Year honors for Girls 14-18. Cathrea had a strong presence throughout the Tour, especially early on when she dominated the Spring Series. In July, Cathrea represented the United States in the Evian Masters Junior Cup in Switzerland where her team finished fourth place overall.
The Tour will start its fourth season with Spring Series competition commencing in March 2011.
