MERCED – Gene Ackerman of Valley Hi held onto his first-round lead to capture the inaugural NCGA Super Senior Championship at Merced Golf and Country Club in a wire-to-wire win.

Ackerman followed his opening-round even par 72 with a three-over 75 for a 147 total. Two back and in the runner-up slot was Lee Jeberjahn of San Luis Obispo, the same position Jeberjahn occupied to start the final round.

Jay Guerin of Callippe Preserve grabbed third place, finishing three back of the champion.

It was Ackerman’s opening-round 72 that spelled the difference in the event; it was the best score of the championship by two strokes at the tough 6,200-yard Merced Golf and Country Club. Scores in the 80s and 90s were the norm in the first scratch NCGA championship for golfers aged 65 or older.

Super Senior Champion Gene Ackerman, third-place finisher Jay Guerin and runner-up Lee Jeberjahn
