Jr Tour of Nor Calif. Spring Series IV – Hunter Ranch GC
The Junior Tour continued its spring series at Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles. Under sunny skies but cool conditions, some great scores emerged.
After the first round, the Steven Sunwoo Choi led the Boys Championship Flight with an amazing round of 69. His five birdie and two bogey round was good enough for a four shot lead over Ryan Knop and Jaskaran Sihota, both of whom shot one over par 73. Will Brueckner found himself in the final group as well, with a solid first round score of 74. Eddy Lai, Chris Parkinson and Aaron Bronis were all in the hunt too with their first round 75s.
Truett Waldon led after the first round of the Boys First Flight. His tremendous round of 75 was two shots clear of Amay Poria, who shot a 77, and four shots ahead of Tim Lamascus, who shot a 79. Bryce Yoshimoto, with an 80 on day one, was also in the final group.
The Girls Championship Flight had some of familiar names at the top of its leader board after the first day. Carly Childs and Casie Cathrea were at the top with strong rounds of 75, and Marissa Hinchman and Hannah Sodersten were only two shots back at 77. In fact, Carly had her first round at two under par with four holes left to play, but was unfortunately tripped up by her finishing holes.
The Girls First Flight was also led by a troika of familiar names. Angela Liu shot an 84 to lead the way, followed by Jessica Luo and Belinda Hu who both shot 86 to tie for second after the first day.
Day Two started with very chilly conditions and overcast skies. The early players braved temperatures in the high 30s as a thick layer of fog also blanketed the course. However, the day warmed up nicely, the fog lifted quickly, and some great golf was played throughout the day.
The Boys Championship Flight was won in a playoff by Sunwoo Steven Choi over Ryan Knop. Sunwoo endured a nine on the fifteenth hole to shoot a final round 76, and Ryan shot a stellar even par 72. Their total of 145 put them on the 10th hole for the playoff as Sunwoo prevailed with a par.
The Boys First Flight was won by Truett Waldon. His second day was nearly as good as his first, as he shot a 77 on Sunday for a total of 152. That was two shots better than second place winner Amay Poria, who shot two rounds of 77 for a 154 total, and has continued to play steady golf throughout the early part of the season. Tim Lamascus was also extremely consistent. His two rounds of 79 on Saturday and Sunday was good enough for third place with a total of 158.
Casie Cathrea added to her win total with a victory at Hunter Ranch. Her stellar final round of 71 enabled her to cruise home with the win. Casie’s total of 146 was eight shots better than second place winner Carly Childs. Carly shot a 79 on the final day for a two day total of 154. Hannah Sodersten’s 79 on day two was good enough for a total of 156 and third place.
The Girls First Flight came down to a playoff between Jessica Luo and Anglea Liu. The Junior Tour regulars battled for two playoff holes until Jessica came out victorious. Belinda Hu came in third place with a two day total of 172.
