PEBBLE BEACH – 2011 Women’s Champion: Devon Brown

Devon Brown prevailed over rough weather and tough competition to take home the NCGA Women’s Championship title carding an impressive three-under-par 142 at Poppy Hills.

Brown’s strong first round score of three-under-par 70 gave her the lead heading into the finals.  “I knew par would probably win, so I tried to stay within myself and play consistent, and that’s what I did,” the champion said.

Brown, a rising sophomore at Northwestern University, added four birdies today to the six she posted in the first round to pull ahead of the pack.

Last year’s champion Emily Childs was a close runner up carding an overall 146.  Childs made a push for the title in the second round, with birdies on the final two holes, and posted a one-over 73 for the day.  Brittany Smith of Rancho Murieta CC took third with a six-over-par 151.

2011 Senior Champion: Sandra Woodruff

Sandra Woodruff of Pasatiempo GC posted a birdie and an eagle in her final two holes of the day, taking the top spot in the NCGA Senior Women’s Championship.

“I guess I had a few good shots today,” said Woodruff.  She lead by one stroke after posting a three-under-par 76 in the first round.  She followed up that performance with a seven-over 79 in round two, bringing her final score to a 10-over 155.

Runner up Marianne Towersey, who won the event in 2007, carded a six-over-par 78 for an overall score of 157.  Terry Mayes of Las Margaritas GC finished in third place with a 158 overall score, three strokes behind the champion.
