Jr Tour of Northern Calif – Summer Series II – Belmont CC
The Junior Tour of Northern California held its second tournament of the Summer Series at Belmont Country Club in Fresno. A special thank you, on behalf of all the competitors and NCGA/NCPGA volunteers and staff, goes out to Belmont Country Club’s Board of Directors, members and staff that made this a truly enjoyable competition.
In the Boys Championship Flight, Bryson Dechambeau, playing at his home course, made it look easy after carding a 66 in his first round. He made the turn in the morning round at 5-under par 31, and was able to add two more birdies on the 12th and 14th holes to get it to 7-under par and was looking at posting a new course record which is currently a 65 held by PGA Tour rookie, Kevin Chappell. Dechambeau, finished with a couple of three putt bogeys on 15 and 16 and a birdie on 18 to finish one off the course record. His second round 70 was enough to secure the win by five strokes over Cody Neal and Justin Machiando. Cody took home second place by a card-off. He was also one of the two competitors to earn a spot in the field of the US Junior Amateur Championship next month after qualifying on Monday at Belmont. 7th place finisher, Hayden Shieh, was the medalist in the same event. Marchiando may have lost the card-off, but he posted the lowest second round score of the day with a bogey free 67 on the par 72, 6511 yard course. Jeff Yamaguchi was the net winner in the Boys Championship Flight with a net two-day total 134.
Madchen Ly won the Girls Championship Flight by six strokes over her nearest competitor with a two day total 149. Ly, had seven impressive birdies in her first round to card a two under 72 on the 6263 yard layout. Second place went to Nina Fairbairn and third place finisher was Annie Bowlsby of Monterey. Andrea Mersino won in a card-off against Taylor Shweiki to take first place in the net division of the Girls Championship Flight.
In the Boys Flight, Justin Avery of Clovis also won by six strokes over second place finisher, Zachary Mikus (won by card-off) and third place finisher Benjamin Hy. The net winner with an incredible two-day total of 113, was Benjamin’s brother, Brendan Hy.
Jessica Luo from San Jose had a two day total 159 that lapped the Girls First Flight field with a twelve stroke victory over Belinda Hu from Fremont. Pacific Grove’s Lauren Molin took home third place honors. Grace Chen of Sunnyvale took home the net award in the Girls flight with a net total 151.
Once again, we would like to thank Belmont Country Club for their warm hospitality and we hope that we can continue to aid in their tremendous support for the juniors in Northern California.
