100th Annual California State Amateur Championship

June 20-25, 2011

2009 California State Amateur Champion Geoff Gonzalez

SAN FRANCISCO – Two winners were apparent on Wednesday at the 100th Annual California State Amateur Championship, and neither were players making it to the round of 16. TaylorMade and Titleist made their presence known as both products were displayed in the majority of the 32 competitors’ bags. In fact only one player, Matt Hansen, didn’t use any TaylorMade or Titleist products as he had everything Nike.

TaylorMade led the driver count at 15. The chic R11 driver was found to be very popular as eight were carrying it in their bag, while the other seven consisted of R9s and Burner SuperFasts. Titleist came in second with 11 players hitting either the 910D2 or 910D3. Four Ping drivers, a Callaway driver, and a Nike driver were the other drivers seen in match play.

Titleist did edge out TaylorMade when it came to sets of irons as 14 players had Titleist compared to TaylorMade’s 13.

The other five sets of clubs consisted of two sets of Ping irons, one Nike, Callaway and Cleveland.

Titleist’s ProV1 still seems dominant among exceptional players as 22 played with it on Wednesday. However, the new TaylorMade Penta made quite an impression as a rookie with eight players hitting it off the tee. Nike and Srixon were the other two balls found among the 32 players.

Match Four, featuring Cameron Rappleye and 2009 State Am Champion Geoff Gonzalez was the only match to have all one type of equipment across the board, sporting Titleist. Additionally, Rappleye and Gonzalez were wearing Titleist hats.
