Jr Tour of Northern Calif – Summer Series III – Metropolitan GL

Metropolitan Golf Links
July 18-19, 2011

The Junior Tour of Northern California continued its Summer Series at Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland, California.  The links style course showed itself to be true to form when winds kicked up on the first day of play, and players’ shots continued to be either blown into the rough, or would roll into trouble.  High scores were the norm on the first day, but a few players were able to overcome the windy conditions and shoot some very good scores.  Although the final day brought overcast skies, it also brought calm winds and much better scoring conditions.

From the Boys Championship Flight, RJ Magat was one of those players who overcame the tougher conditions on the first day.  His first round 73 had him in first place, two shots ahead of three players who shot 75 – Shrish Dwivedi, Brennin Hardy and Joshua McCarthy.  These four players made up the final group on day two.  Shrish took advantage of the calmer conditions on the final day with a tremendous round of two under par 70.  The only player to break par, Shrish won the tournament with a total of 145 – three shots ahead of RJ Magat, whose final round of 75 gave him a total of 148.  Third place went to Derek Snediker.  Derek shot a very strong  final round 72 to finish at 150, five shots back of the lead.

The Girls Championship Flight had a first time winner on the Junior Tour.  Marissa Hinchman broke into the winner’s circle on our tour for the first time with rounds of 76-72.  Although her final round was marked by three bogeys, Marissa bounced back with three birdies for her even par round 72, as she cruised home with a six shot victory.  Melissa Hosman finished in second place with rounds of 78-76 for a 154 total.  Third place went to Isabella Bosetti, who shot 76-81 for a total of 157.

The Boys First Flight was a tale of consistency by its winners.  Bradley Keller’s stellar final round of 76 actually matched his first round 76.  His consistency and steady play was enough for a two shot victory over second place winner Joseph Bosetti.  Joe was also a model of consistency.  He shot 77-77 for a 154 total.  Third place went to Jason Pan.  Jason posted scores of 78 and 78 for a total of 156.

The Girls First Flight was won by Simar Singh.  Simar was on the shelf for a bit, but her rest has brought her game back to the level she is used to playing.  She played very well both days – posting scores of 75-78.  Her two day total of 153 was two shots clear of second place finisher Tyler Akabane, whose rounds of 79 and 76 left her two shots behind Simar.  Katherine Zhu finished third; Katherine’s rounds of 78-82 left her seven shots behind the leader.

The other big news of the tournament was Drew Kim’s first hole-in-one!  Drew aced the 7th hole at Metropolitan, and by his account, actually got to see the ball disappear into the hole!  Congratulations, Drew!

Also, a big thanks to the Metropolitan Golf Links and their staff for hosting our juniors and helping us put on another great tournament for them.
