Hanna-Wehrman Cup Matches

October 25, 2011
By Katie Stoeckle

PEBBLE BEACH – It was a fight to the final match to decide the Hanna Wehrman Cup, with the NCGA amateurs defeating the NCPGA professionals 10 ½ to 9 ½ Tuesday at Poppy Hills.  The NCGA trailed the professionals by three points after yesterday’s first two rounds.

“The team had an amazing comeback, scoring seven out of their 10 ½ points to close the gap and win the Cup,” said NCGA team captain Chris Clark.  “We had several key victories.   The day really turned around when Darryl Donovan halved with Steve Pellegrine on the last hole.  Both back nine comebacks by Brent Booth and Steve Wilson were instrumental to the win.”

Kevin Wentworth’s 1-up victory over Mitch Lowe solidified the amateur’s success after NCGA Player of the Year Randy Haag fell 2 and 1 to Stuart Smith. “Kevin came through huge for us,” Clark said. “His winning the final match of the day put us over the top.”

In other matches, NCGA amateur Bryson Dechambeau closed out professional Chris Borrego 5 and 4, while Logan Goulding beat Jason Schmuhl 4 and 3.  Lance Johnson posted the day’s first win for the professionals, overcoming Anthony Barrera 3 and 1.

The annual event, beginning in 1967, invites the top Northern California amateurs to play against the best NCPGA professionals, determined through a qualifying points system. This three-round tournament combines four-ball match play, foursome match play and singles match play in a Ryder Cup format.

The NCGA Hanna-Wehrman team comprises Anthony Barrera, Kevin Wentworth, Danny Paniccia, Darryl Donovan, Randy Haag, Mike Steiler, Logan Goulding, Bryson Dechambeau, Brent Booth, and Steve Wilson.  They competed against the NCPGA team of Eric Goettsch, Mitch Lowe, Steve Hummel, Jason Schmuhl, Rick Leibovich, Lance Johnson, Jeffrey Anderson, Steve Pellegrine, Stuart Smith, Robert Poole and Chris Borrego.

The Hanna-Wehrman Cup was named for former NCGA Executive Director Bob Hanna and lifetime PGA of America member Lyle Wehrman.

Staedler-Jetter Senior Cup Matches

The NCGA amateurs continued their Staedler-Jetter Cup winning streak by defeating the NCPGA professionals 19 ½ to 8 ½.  The NCGA won the event last year and has been in possession of the trophy since 2000.  Like their Hanna-Wehrman counterparts, the NCGA senior team won last year and have held on to the trophy for the past six years.

“The seniors were matched by good play,” said Clark.  “Jim Knoll’s 5-hole comeback was great, but they all played well.”

Jeff Burda, Mark Miller, Ron Johnson and Bob Olds triumphed over their respective professional competitors 3 and 2.  The Ed Hester claimed the professional’s sole win and largest margin of victory for seniors of the day 5 and 4 over Doug Johnson.

NCGA Senior Player of the Year Jim Knoll came back from a large five-hole deficit early in the day to tie with Shawn Kelly.

Jim Knoll, Jeff Burda, Rob Adolph, Doug Johnson, Dan Bieber, Herb Jensen, Peter Moren, John Enright, Mark Miller, Casey Boyns, Gene Ackerman, Jay Guerin, Ron Johnson and Bob Olds make up the NCGA Staedler-Jetter team.  The NCPGA’s team consists of Rick Dudley, Ed Hester, Dave Delong, Ron Parsons, Michael Cook, Glen Stubblefield, Al Weinhold, Mitch Thomas, Shawn Kelly, Charlie Gibson, Jim Collart, Gary Plato, Rick Rhoads, and Al Krueger.

The creation of the Senior Cup Matches was due in large part to former NCGA and Poppy Holding board member Rudy Staedler and Rick Jetter, longtime pro and owner at Spring Valley GC in Milpitas. The cup was renamed this year to honor both gentlemen.
