The Junior Tour of Northern California continued its 2012 season over the weekend at Diablo Grande GC in Patterson, Calif. Low scores proved tough to come by as only a handful scores were even par or better in the championship flights. The weather, which called for rain, didn’t see a drop, but conditions were tough as temperatures were cool and wind was abundant. In the end three new winners were crowned with one repeat winner.
The Boys’ Championship Flight once again proved to be very competitive as Steven Sunwoon Choi of Dublin won with the only under-par total of the tournament at 143. Choi had the highlight of the tournament on Saturday as he double-eagled the par-5 16th hole. The rare albatross gave him a share of the first round lead at 1-under 71 with fellow Dublin resident Jacob Solomon. He followed Saturday’s play with a solid even par 72 to claim the Spring Series II title. His consistency held off two surging competitors in Fremont’s Hayden Shieh and Kit Carson of Galt who finished right behind him in second and third, respectively. Shieh shot the low round of the day with a 3-under 69 to fall one shot short of playoff for a 144 total. Similarly, Carson who posted a first round 75, followed with a 2-under par 70 Sunday to finish two shots back at 145. Spring Series I winner Shintaro Ban of San Jose finished nine shots back in a tie for 12th at 152.
Two-time Junior Tour of Northern California Girls’ Player of the Year, Casie Cathrea won her first event of the year in the Girls’ Championship Flight after posting a 36-hole score of 142 to beat out last week’s winner Hannah Suh of San Jose, who finished at 143. Cathrea, a Livermore resident, was tied for the lead with Suh going into Sunday as the two matched one another with 1-under par 70s. On Sunday, Cathrea was one shot better as she finished with a 72 to Suh’s 73. Sunday’s low round of the day went to Paige Lee of Folsom, who shot an even-par 71 to finish with 149 aggregate, good enough for third place.
The repeat winner was Pleasant Hill’s Yealimi Noh of the Girls’ First Flight. After a solid 79 on Saturday to take the lead Noh posted an 82 Sunday for a 161 total to hold off Folsom’s Noor Ahmed who finished in second with a 164. In a tie for third San Mateo’s Kiran Sangha and Kaylyn King of Patterson carded two-day totals of 167. Sangha shot the Sunday low round for the Girls’ First Flight with an 80.
Michael Perez of Roseville ran away with the victory in the Boys’ First Flight posting two rounds in the 70s to win by a wide margin. Perez shot 76-78-154 finishing 10 shots better than second place finisher Hayden Sorbo of Fresno at 164. Third place saw a tie between Modesto’s Daniel Pena and Rayshad James of Foster City at a two-day score of 167.
The Junior Tour’s Spring Series will continue this weekend as Spring Series III will be held at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, Calif.
