PEBBLE BEACH- The playing conditions at Poppy Hills GC were extremely difficult as a heavy fog settled in for the entire round of the North Zone Championship. The weather did not affect Mike Haworth, David Spinks, Steve Beaton and Craig Burkett as the team of four from Churn Creek GC went wire-to-wire to win by an impressive six strokes and a final score 37-under par, 249. Churn Creek GC finished the final three holes with three consecutive eagles, allowing them to pull away from the rest of the groups.
Starting the day tied for eighth place and six strokes off the lead was Oak Creek GC. The only hope for the team of four to finish in the top two was to post an extremely low score. Through the first nine holes the team posted a remarkable 15-under par and began to pull away from any other contenders. A final round of 21-under par, 123 was good enough for Oak Creek GC to finish in second place with a tournament score of 31-under par, 255. Rounding out the top five are Willow Creek GCC and Canyon Oaks CC tied for third and Shelter Cove GC standing alone in fifth.
Churn Creek GC and Oak Creek GC will compete in the Zone Championship August 27-28, 2012 at Poppy Hills GC and Spyglass Hill GC.

CARMEL – Churn Creek GC surged into the lead after the first day of the North Zone Championships after carding a net score of 16-under, 126 at Quail Lodge GC. The team of Mike Haworth, David Spinks, Steve Beaton and Craig Burkett capitalized on two net double-eagles, at the ninth and 13th, to gain their advantage on the field.
The group, which started on the 10th tee, gained nine strokes on holes 13-18, capped off by an eagle on the par-4 18th before rounding the turn. The lone blemish on Churn Creek’s card came at the second hole when the team faltered to card a double-bogey. The leaderboard is tightly bunched with a trio of teams from Canyon Oaks CC, Shelter Cove GC and Gold Hills GC standing one stroke behind the leaders at 15-under par. Two others, GC of Tierra Oaks and Redwood Empire GCC, finished the round at 14-under par.
The final round of the two-day event, which takes the two low net scores of a four-man team, is slated for tomorrow at Poppy Hills GC.
