PEBBLE BEACH – The 49th Annual Senior Net Championship concluded Tuesday at Poppy Hills with blue skies, blustery winds and a smattering of come-from-behind victories.
Jim Stout of Saratoga CC began the day in a tie for 12th place and 10 shots behind the 18-hole leader of the President Flight, Robert Duncan of eClub East Bay. Stout posted a net 68 on the final day of the tournament to surge into the lead of the flight with a net 77-68–145.
“The conditions today were excellent. The course is in great shape,” Stout said. “I was so soaking wet from yesterday. I believe I was nine over par on the last six holes yesterday. The grips were gone, and everything was just terrible. I just wanted to finish and play well today, which I did.”
His consistent play resulted in seven net birdies and eight net pars, just enough to best Duncan’s net effort of 67-79–146. Duncan lost the lead in the final three holes of the day, where he was two over, compared to Stout’s 1-under result in the home stretch. Duncan tied for second with Quy Pham of San Jose Muni eGolf Clubhouse with a net total of 146. Pham carded a net birdie at the Par 4, 14th hole to take the overall flight lead before faltering with a net 4-over on the final four holes.
In the Director Flight, Brian Scott of Gleneagles GC made up a five-shot deficit in the final round to finish with a net 75-69–144 to earn the gold medal. Scott’s round of 69 on Tuesday included a stretch of five consecutive net birdies on the back nine to narrowly edge Steven Menge.
“I loved the challenge of the rain, but today was beautiful,” Scott said after the win. “The contrast of yesterday to today, if you love golf, that’s what you love – the challenge.”
Menge, the 18-hole leader from Half Moon Bay GL, triple-bogeyed the 17th hole to slip into second with a net 70-75–145. A three-way tie for the bronze medal in the flight resulted between William Hudson of Stonetree GC, Paul Layrac of Northwood GC and Bill Seiden of Rio Vista GC, each with a net total of 147.
The low round of the day and the tournament belonged to Secretary Flight champion, Tom May of Timber Creek GC. He earned low honors after carding an eye-popping net 63 to conclude the tournament with a net 75-63–138. His three net eagles were coupled with seven net birdies in the final round to knock an item off May’s golf bucket list, leaving the elusive hole-in-one to top the list.
“Absolutely! Without a doubt this is my best golf moment,” May beamed. “I’m almost in tears, I’m just so excited. The best shot I had in the bag today was lucky bounces.”
May began the day five strokes out of the lead in seventh place. He edged out fellow Timber Creek GC member John Jameson, who finished in second with a net 73-69–142. Table Mountain GC’s Rodney Ritchie rounded out the top three in the flight with a consistent 10 pars in Tuesday’s final round to finish with a net 73-70–143.
