CARMEL – How should a team close out a zone tournament to become champions? For Shawn Breakey, Greg Leuterio, Robert Ruff and Dave Schutt of Bartley Cavanaugh, the answer involved shooting six net eagles on the final nine holes. The team from Bartley Cavanaugh entered the final round of the Sacramento Zone in a tie for second place. After a slow start through their first nine holes, the only hope to remain in contention was to post an epic final nine holes. After posting four eagles out of six holes, Bartley Cavanaugh was back in contention. The team of four secured the tournament with eagles on the final two holes to post a tournament net score of 255, 31-under par.
The battle for second place came down between the leaders after the first day, Bass Lake GC and Haggin Oaks GC, who entered the day tied for fourth place. Bass Lake GC finished their final three holes 1-under par while Haggin Oaks GC finished their final three holes 3-under par. The two stroke difference was the deciding factor as Haggin Oaks GC finished in second place with a tournament net score of 259, 27-under par, while Bass Lake GC finished in third with a tournament net score of 261, 25-under par. Wildhawk GC finished the tournament in fourth place while Green Tree Tournament GC, Teal Bend GC and Cypress Lake GC finished in a tie for fifth.

PEBBLE BEACH – Blue skies and warm weather led to a beautiful opening day for the Sacramento Zone at Poppy Hills GC. Playing conditions were set up perfect for low scores, as seven of the 22 teams shot a net 10-under par or better. Dennis Marty, Gary Costello, Rodney Nishimura and David Bruegeman of Bass Lake GC set the pace with a net 18-under par. Consistency and taking advantage of the par fives was the key for the team of Bass Lake GC. On the day the team of four posted only one score worse than par and played the par fives 12-under.
Bartley Cavanaugh GC and Reserve at Spanos Park GC are in a tie for second place and two shots off the lead with a first round score of 128, 16-under par. In a three way tie for fourth at 14-under par are the teams from Valley Hi CC, Wildhawk GC and Haggin Oaks GC. With so many teams in contention, the final round should make for an exciting finish.
