PEBBLE BEACH – The final round of the North Sierra Zone Championship finished today at Poppy Hills GC with Fall River Valley GC going wire to wire to take home the title, posting a tournament total net score of 251, 35-under par. The team of four consisting of Dave Gilmore, Hal Gilmore, Russ Reiner and Hardy Vestal opened the first two holes with back-to-back net eagles. After a fast start combined with entering the day with an eight stroke lead, the team from Fall River Valley GC was never challenged for the lead.
The low round of the day went to Frank Brunelli, Winston Giles, Ernie Givani and Barry Mitchell of Plumas Pine GC. In a format which takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team, Plumas Pine GC finished the round net 24-under par. Entering the final nine holes, Plumas Pine GC needed a strong finish to have a chance for second place. With a net double eagle on 10 followed with a net eagle on 11, the team of four never looked back. Posting a net 12-under par over the final nine holes catapulted the team from sixth place to second place, finishing the tournament with a net 254, 32-under par.
Bailey Creek GC had a strong final round showing, shooting a net 18-under par, good enough for third place, followed by Weed Mens GC which finished fourth. Rounding out the top five was Mc Cloud GC. After the first round of play, Mc Cloud GC was in second place, but after a disappointing final round, the team of four dropped to fifth place.
Fall River Valley GC and Plumas Pine GC will represent the North Sierra Zone during the Zone Championship held August 27-28 at Poppy Hills GC and Spyglass Hill GC.
