PEBBLE BEACH – NCGA Net Amateur Qualifying took place Thursday across 10 different Northern California courses as players tried to qualify for next month’s championship at Poppy Hills GC.
Bidwell Park GC saw the lowest net score of the day, a net 61 by Patrick Welch. Also qualifying from that site were Glen Beske, Ryan Hake, Vint Stevenson and Ryan Hansen, who each shot a net score of 70 or better.
Mare Island also saw a low score, a net 63, from Shawn Andrade, whose nearest competition (Marbue Mark) was four strokes behind him. The five others to qualify were Travis Early (71), Ron Tatti (72), Aaron Jensen (73), Carl Thoerson (73) and Justin Lyon (74).
Gregory Garcia led the way at Lockeford Springs GC with a net score of 64. Ten other players qualified behind him, eight of those posting a net score in the 60s. At Metropolitan GL David Tuialuuluu posted a net score of 65, three shots better than Warren Wincorn at a net 68. Seven players besides Tuialuuluu and Wincorn qualified at Metropolitan GL with net scores of 73 or better.
Chardonnay GC and Haggin Oaks GC saw ties atop their respective leaderboards and both also held large qualifiers, with each site awarding 16 qualifying spots for the championship. Chardonnay GC had a three-way tie for the top spot as Ric Buesgen, Dennis Bonds and Roberto Esperaza fired net scores of 68. At Haggin Oaks there was a two-way tie for first, Jesse Sierra and Derek West posted net scores of 66. Del Monte GC, the other maxed out qualifier that gave away 16 spots, was led by Dan Kelly who shot a net score of 66.
Poppy Ridge held two separate qualifiers among its 27 holes. Ray Coler led all qualifiers on the Chardonnay and Zinfandel combo with a net 66, while Don Phillips shot the top score on the Zinfandel and Merlot setup, with a net 64. Both setups played favorably as a net score of 70 or better was needed on Chardonnay and Zinfandel, while a net 71 was needed on Zinfandel and Merlot.
Santa Clara GTC provided plenty of under-par net scores, six of which were in the 60s. Earl Allison led the way with a net 65, tied for second were Jerry Thorsness, Lance Roberts and William Strahan at net 68, and tied for fifth each at a net 69 were Mike Eurkus and Joe Mausser. Five others qualified from Santa Clara GTC with scores of 71 or better.
Riverside GC played tough for its competitors as the lowest qualifying net score coming in at 69 by Manuel Herrera. Others who qualified at Riverside GC were Charles Martin, Rick Wasilchuk, Ron Fellows, Leo Cervantes, Alan Axt and Alex Stephenson, who each finished with a net score of 74 or better.
The 19th Annual Net Amateur Championship will take place at Poppy Hills GC, October 15-16. All results are unofficial until the NCGA Championships and Events has reviewed the scorecards from all the qualifiers.
