Seaside—San Jose residents Justin Suh and Sabrina Iqbal closed out the year with another pair of victories.
Suh, the 2013 Junior Tour of Northern California Player of the Year, shot a final round 3-under 69 to come from three behind and win the Boys’ Championship title at the inaugural JTNC Holiday Classic at Monterey’s Del Monte Golf Course and Black Horse Golf Course with a two-day total of 2-under 142. His Bay Area counterpart,Iqbal, who won back-to-back JTNC titles in August (Fall Series I and II), had a final round 3-over 75 at Del Monte to win the Girls’ Championship by three.
In his final round on Black Horse, Suh was nearly flawless, carding five birdies with only two bogeys. Three of his birdies came on three of the course’s four par-5′s. In his first round at Del Monte, Suh also took advantage of the par-5′s. His 1-over 73 on the historic course included an eagle on No.9 and a birdie on the 17th. Over the two day Classic, Suh played the par-5′s to a total of 6-under.
While he’d also make a run with a final round 70 , Tanner Hughes of Livermore settled for second place with a two-day total of 143. Hughes also five birdies in his final round but he’d card three bogeys, including two critical ones on holes 17 and 18 that ended any chances for a potential playoff.
First round leader David Na of Alameda, who stormed into the lead with a 70 on Del Monte, finished in third place after slipping to a 74 on Black Horse.
Iqbal, who followed up her two August wins with a pair of second place finishes in September, also came from behind to win. After struggling at times during a first round 79 on Black Horse, Iqbal settled herself down with a 75 at Del Monte that included three birdies to come in at 10-over 154. In her round on the longer Black Horse course, she’d card only one birdie.
First round leader Megan Conder of Brentwood, who opened with a solid first round 76 on Black Horse, fell into a tie for second with San Jose’s Jessica Luo at 157 after an 81 at Del Monte. Luo, who also hails from San Jose, had an opportunity to go lower but was tripped up by a triple-bogey on the par-3 14th.
Both the Girls and Boys’ First Flights came down to sudden death playoffs. In the Girls’ Flight, Clare Brady of Campbell defeated Jeilysse Bondoc of Brentwood on the first hole of sudden death. Both had come in at 27-over 171 following final rounds of 85 and 90, respectively, at Del Monte. Bondoc entered the final round with a five stroke lead after a stellar opening round 81 at Black Horse.
In the Boys’ Flight, Avi S. Khemani of Los Altos Hills defeated Joonsung Ha of Palo Alto following a multiple hole playoff. Both Khemani and Ha came in at 12-over 156 after rounds of 79 and 71, respectively, at Del Monte.
