Junior Tour of Northern California Spring Series III
April 1-2, 2013
The Junior Tour of Northern California, presented by Capital Insurance Group, continued its 2013 season with Spring Series III at Castlewood CC in Pleasanton, Calif. This week’s event was an anomaly on a couple different levels, most ostensibly, the event was held on Monday and Tuesday during the school year instead of a weekend, which was made possible due to a majority of juniors having spring break this week. The second is not nearly apparent until a closer look as the winners of all four flights won rather comfortably, and there was amazingly not a single scorecard playoff for a runner-up medal. Spring Series III champions, Steven Sunwoo Choi (boys championship), Andrew Wong (boys first), Casie Cathrea (girls championship) and Sophia Hui (girls first) all won their flights by a margin of three more or more strokes.
In the boys championship flight, Choi won by a margin of four strokes, finishing at 138, four-under par for 36 holes. The Dublin resident went wire to wire to win, thanks to two rounds in under par fashion with a three-under 68 and one-under 70. Coming in at even-par 142 and alone in second was fellow Dublin resident, Jacob Solomon. The 2012 Boys Junior Tour Player of the Year improved by two strokes in the final round, firing a one-under par 70 after a first round 72. Third place went to Zach Smith of Pleasanton, who posted a two-day total of 145. The Castlewood CC member used his course knowledge to his advantage as he put together back-to-back consistent rounds of 72 and 73.
The boys first flight had the closest battle for first place of all the flights. Still, that wasn’t much of a battle as Wong won by a three-stroke margin with a 36-hole score of 150. The Santa Clara resident won due to a spectacular final round that catapulted him up the leaderboard to take home first place. After an opening round 79 and in a tie for fourth place, two shots off the 18-hole lead, Wong fired a final round even-par 71 to seize the top spot. Second place went to first round co-leader Nikhil Swaminathan of San Jose. Despite bettering his first round score of 77 with a final round 76, the San Jose resident had to settle for second place with a 153 total. In third place Matthieu Lu, another of three first round co-leaders, finished at 156. Lu of Castro Valley had two sub-80 rounds with a 77 and 79.
Cathrea of Livermore had the most dominating performance among the three flights winning by a margin of six strokes. The two-time Girls Junior Tour Player of the Year earned her first JTNC victory of 2013 thanks to rounds of 74 and 71 to finish at 145. Second place went to Kimberly Liu of Pleasanton, who posted a 36-hole score of 151. The Pleasanton resident finished Monday’s first round three strokes behind Cathrea, with a 77, and again was three shots higher than her on Tuesday with a 74. Nina Fairburn of Orinda earned third place with a two-day total of 156, carding rounds of 81 and 75.
In the girls first flight, Hui of Dublin won by a margin of four strokes with a 36-hole score of 160. The Dublin resident’s best golf came in the opening round as she fired a 77 and followed that with a final round 83. Emily Rotter of Fremont, who won Spring Series II at Windsor GC, earned second place with a 36-hole score of 164. The Fremont resident had the low final round of the girls first flight with an 81 to go along with her first round 83. Jamie West of Burlingame took home third place with a 36-hole score of 166. She held a one-shot lead after 18 holes, having fired a 76, before faltering in the final round with a 90.
