CGA Amateur Qualifying – Fountaingrove
April 29, 2013
SANTA ROSA – Two Santa Rosa residents were able to punch their tickets to the 102nd CGA Amateur Championship for this summer, and did so in their own stomping grounds. Nick Rogers and Alex Reno shared medalist honors at Fountaingrove GAC by each firing rounds of two-over par 74.
Rogers, a 16-year-old from Santa Rosa, carded a two-over par 74 with two birdies and four bogeys on his day. Rogers had a rather uninteresting front-nine as he made seven pars, a birdie and a bogey. On the back-nine Rogers got to one-under par after a birdie on No. 12, but a poor finish with three straight bogeys on Nos. 16, 17 and 18, dropped him to two-over par.
Santa Rosa resident and Fountaingrove GAC member, Reno, had a much more circuitous way to two-over par 74. Things weren’t looking good for the 20-year-old when he made a double-bogey on the par-4 second and closed his front nine with a bogey on the ninth to make the turn at three-over par. However, Reno heated up and got back to even-par with birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 14, before making bogeys on Nos. 15 and 18 to finish at two-over par.
The third and final qualifying spot went to Derek Ackerman of Half Moon Bay, who finished with a five-over par 77. Ackerman made six bogeys and a double bogey in his round, but had a few bright spots too, converting three birdies on Nos. 5, 13 and 16.
First and second alternate spots went to Roman Hubalek of Santa Rosa and Brendan Warner of Yuba City, who both finished tied for fourth at six-over par. Hubalek seized the first alternate spot after the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.
The 102nd Annual CGA Amateur Championship will take place June 17-22 at Monterey Peninsula CC in Pebble Beach.
