PEBBLE BEACH – Titleist lived up to its slogan—The #1 Ball in Golf—at least in theory at the 102nd California State Amateur Championship. Of the 32 players in the match play field 19 teed off with its popular ProV1 ball. TaylorMade was second in ball popularity with nine players using, while three players used Nike and one used Bridgestone.
Although TaylorMade came in second when it came to ball popularity, it was the club of choice among match play players. Seventeen players were sporting one of TaylorMade’s popular white headed drivers, while 15 players had TaylorMade as their primary iron. Titleist was runner-up in both irons and drivers as seven players used a Titleist driver and nine used its irons. Nike came in third in both irons and driver with four players a piece, while Ping was fourth in both category with three drivers and two sets of irons. Only one player was playing Callaway irons and driver.
Looking at the trends when a survey was last conducted at the 2011 California State Amateur at Olympic Club, not much has changed in those two years. Granted, while the fields included some of the same yet different players, the results proved similar. In 2011, 15 players were playing TaylorMade drivers and 10 were playing Titleist drivers. More players did play Titleist irons in 2011, 14 to 13 over TaylorMade, while the ProV1 dominated with 22 players using it as their primary ball.
YOUNG MAN’S GAME: The 2013 match play field at Monterey Peninsula CC is once again dominated by primarily college-aged golfers with the average age being 21.75-years-old. Only five mid-amateurs qualified for match play this year and after Wednesday’s first round only one remains, 30-year-old Nick Moore.
The oldest player to make the match play field was Dan Sullivan at 45-years-old, while the youngest was 16-year-old Sean Crocker. Both players were eliminated on Wednesday meaning Moore is now the oldest player remaining, while co-medalist Pereira is the youngest. The average age of the round of 16 is 21-years-old with five of those players being under the age of 20.
