EL CERRITO – U.S. Girls’ Junior Qualifying took place at Mira Vista GCC on Monday with players competing for seven available championship spots. With a stroke of luck, no playoff was needed to decide the seven spots as exactly seven players finished two-over-par or better.

The leader of that bunch was San Jose’s Sabrina Iqbal, who fired an even-par score of 72, to finish alone in first. Iqbal started her day off right with a birdie on the opening hole, and despite a bogey on the ninth and a double bogey on the 18th, Iqbal was able to convert birdies on Nos. 14 and 16 to cover her mistakes.

Two players tied for second place at one-over-par 73: Jayshree Sarathy of Palo Alto and Siyun Liu of Shanghai. Sarathy got under-par in her round on the front-nine with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6 and 7, but three bogeys coming in on Nos. 8, 17 and 18 pushed her into black numbers. Liu, who started off No. 10, got off to a shaky start opening with a bogey and then making another on No. 13. However, she recovered nicely by making three birdies on Nos. 17, 7 and 8, to go along with two bogeys on Nos. 4 and 9.

Four players captured the final spots by firing a score of two-over-par 74: Kelsey Ulep of Rocklin, Christine Kim of San Jose, Amanjoty Sangha of San Mateo and Megan Conder of Brentwood. Ulep had more birdies on her day (4) than bogeys (3), but what hurt her from an under-par score was a triple-bogey-7. Kim and Conder had three birdies and five bogeys in their rounds, while Sangha showed a similar card with four birdies and six bogeys.

Three players, Anna Zhou, Grace Park and Samantha Gong, tied for eighth place at three-over-par 75, just falling short of qualifying. After a sudden-death playoff Park of San Jose earned first alternate, while Gong of San Francisco earned second alternate.

Players who qualified advance to the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at Sycamore Hills GC in Fort Wayne, Ind. July 22-27.
