PEBBLE BEACH – Some low scores were fired in NCGA Amateur Match Play Qualifying as 123 players advanced to next month’s championship. Qualifying took place at seven different courses with 324 players attempting to earn a spot.
The low score of the seven different sites was fired by Taylor Hobin of Antioch, who posted a six-under-par 66 at Roddy Ranch GC. Finishing just behind Hobin with a score of five-under-par 67 was Ryan Knop, while a third player, Alex Franklin, fired a sub-70 round of three-under-par 69. In total, 18 players were taken from Roddy Ranch GC with the final qualifier being Ryan Janick, the only player at three-over-par 75 to qualify.
Several 68s were out the low qualifying score at other sites, including Del Monte GC, which held the biggest qualifier with 75 players competing for 31 spots. Austin Roberts, the 2012 co-medalist of the NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship, fired a four-under-par 68 to lead all scores. He was followed closely by Johnny Partridge and Steve Donnelly, who each put together rounds of three-under-par 69. The floor for qualifying at Del Monte GC was five-over-par 77 with six of the seven players who posted that number advancing.
Another site to welcome a four-under-par 68 was the Reserve at Spanos Park GC, which saw Colten Passey take medalist honors. Passey was challenged by Andrew Bonner with a score of three-under-par 69 and Patrick Burda, who carded a two-under-par 70. Fourteen other golfers qualified from the Stockton golf course with all of those players scoring a 76 or better.
Riverbend GC was the third site to have a four-under-par 68 as its low score, which was actually posted by two players. Trevor Clayton and Michael Tolladay beat other competitors with ease as the next nearest qualifiers came in at one-over-par 73: Mike Stieler, Daniel Butcher and Chad Bell. The sixth and final player to qualify from the smallest field—only 17 players—was Scott Anderson with a three-over-par 75.
The low score at The Ridge GC was two-under-par 69, which came courtesy of Niles Wright. Will Flitcroft was the only other under-par score with a one-under-par 70, while Jon Peterson and Scott Raber tied for third at even-par 71. Eight other players qualified from The Ridge GC with two players qualifying with a 72, four players qualifying with a 73 and two of the four players who fired 74 qualifying.
Paradise Valley GC held the second largest qualifier next to Del Monte GC with 62 players competing for 22 spots. Sharing medalist honors were Mikey McGinn and Jeff Murphy with a score of two-under-par 70. Nick Sako, Drew Bender and Nick Daniels finished one shot back at one-under-par 71 to tie for third. The qualifying floor for the site came at four-over-par 76, with two of the four players with that score advancing.
San Juan Oaks GC had 17 players qualify from its site, led by teenagers Ryan Han and Bradley Knox at two-under-par 70. Nick Noya finished third at one-under-par 71, while Joe Huston was alone in fourth at even-par 72. Thirteen other players advanced with the final players to qualify firing a five-over-par 77 as two of the three players with that score moving on.
The 110th Annual NCGA Amateur Match Play will take place at Spyglass Hill GC, August 12-16.
