CARMEL – The team from Lake Ridge GC went from second to first place in the final round of the NCGA North Sierra Zone Championship despite not playing as well in Tuesday’s final round. After opening with a net score of 128, 16-under-par at Del Monte GC on Monday, the Lake Ridge GC team followed with a rather pedestrian net score of 134, eight-under-par at Quail Lodge GC. The four-man team of Dan Blake, Allen Gray, David Gray and Tony Shanks converted three net eagles and six net birdies, yet also had four net bogeys on Tuesday. Still, Lake Ridge GC two-day total of 262, 24-under-par was three shots clear of its nearest competition in a format which takes the best two net scores of a four-man team.
Finishing in second place and earning the other spot in next month’s championship was the team from Mt. Hough GC at 265, 21-under-par. Ron Christensen, Dick Grace, Mike Ingle and Darel Joseph of Mt. Hough GC, who started the day in a tie for fifth place after opening with a 133 at Del Monte GC on Monday, fired a 132, 10-under-par at Quail Lodge GC on Tuesday. The quartet of golfers’ round was highlighted by three net eagles and six net birdies despite making two net bogeys.
Tying for third place, two strokes back of a potential playoff at 267, 19-under-par were Fall River Valley GC and Lake Almanor CC. Coming in with a score of 269, 18-under-par and tied for fifth place were Tahoe Donner GC and first-round leader McCloud GC.
Lake Ridge GC and Mt. Hough GC qualify for the 47th Annual NCGA Zone Championship at Spyglass Hill and Del Monte GC on August 26-27.

MONTEREY – Joe Bambino, James Clark, Jon Gut and Bill Michelon of McCloud GC lead after the first round of the North Sierra Zone Championship. The quartet of golfers teamed up for a score of 127, 17-under-par at Del Monte GC in a format which takes the two best scores per hole of a four-man team. McCloud GC had three net double eagles, four net eagles, two net birdies and two net birdies to vault to the top of the leaderboard.
Not far behind and one shot back at 128, 16-under-par is the team from Lake Ridge GC. Dan Blake, Allen Gray, David Gray and Tony Shanks teamed up to make six net eagles and six net birdies to go along with two net bogeys on Monday. In third place at 14-under-par is Tahoe Donner GC while in fourth place is Lake Almanor CC at 13-under-par. Three other teams are not far off and still in the hunt at 11-under-par and tied for fifth: Mt. Hough GC, Bailey Creek GC and Weed GC.
Tomorrow’s final round will take place at Quail Lodge GC with the top two teams advancing to next month’s championship. The winner and runner-up will qualify for the 47th Annual NCGA Zone Championship August 26-27 at Spyglass Hill GC and Del Monte GC.
