MONTEREY – The team from Sequoia Woods GC completed its task on Tuesday, which was to become wire-to-wire winners of the NCGA South Sierra Zone Championship. Timothy Hanrahan, Arturo Herrera, Bill Tillery and Paul Watts followed its score of 124, 18-under-par at Quail Lodge GC on Monday with a 130, 14-under-par at Del Monte GC on Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 254, 32-under-par. After a flawless round on Monday with no bogeys, the quartet of golfers teamed up for five net eagles, six net birdies and a net double bogey on Tuesday in a format which takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team.
Earning second place and the additional qualifying spot wasn’t quite as easy as both Apple Mountain GR and Tahoe City finished at 256, 30-under-par. After three holes of a sudden-death playoff, Apple Mountain GR survived and advanced. The four-man team of Michael Dietz, Michael Dietz Jr., Gary Logan and Jay Toolson followed their first round of 130 at Quail Lodge GC with a 126 at Del Monte GC. The Apple Mountain GR team’s final round included one net double-eagle, five net eagles, seven net birdies and a net double bogey to jump from a tie for fourth to a tie for second.
Losers of the playoff, Tahoe City GC still had a nice day posting the low round of Tuesday a 125, 19-under-par. Tied for fourth place at 259, 27-under-par were Tahoe Paradise GC and Sierra Meadows CC, while alone in sixth—and falling out of qualifying position from Monday—was Saddle Creek GC at 261, 25-under-par.
Sequoia Woods GC and Apple Mountain GR qualify for the 47th Annual NCGA Zone Championship at Spyglass Hill GC and Del Monte GC on August 26-27.
