Junior Tour of Northern California Fall Series I
Sierra Meadows CC
AHWAHNEE – Multiple-stroke victories across all four flights were registered over the weekend to kick-off the Junior Tour of Northern California’s 2013 Fall Series at Sierra Meadows GC. The Fall Series I winners of the four flights were Joshua McCarthy (boys championship), Sabrina Iqbal (girls championship), Evan Peterson (boys first) and Lillian Torres (girls first).
McCarthy had the most dominating performance among all flights earning a six-shot victory thanks to some exceptional paly. The Danville resident fired back-to-back sub-70 rounds, scoring a 66 in the first round followed by a 69 in his final round for a 135, nine-under-par total. His opening round Saturday afternoon was very impressive as the 16-year-old opened with four straight birdies and finished the round with nine birdies total. McCarthy’s 66 could have been much lower if it weren’t for a double bogey on the par-4 10th and a bogey on the par-4 15th. In his final round McCarthy made four birdies on the front-nine along with one bogey before cruising to a victory with nine straight pars on the back-nine. Finishing in second place at 141, three-under-par was Justin Avery of Clovis, who put together rounds of 67 and 74. Third place went to Deane Rinaldi of Santa Cruz with a score of 142, two-under-par, which consisted of back-to-back rounds of 71.
While the boys championship flight had the biggest margin of victory and boys first flight had the smallest with winner Peterson winning by two strokes. Starting the final round in a three-way tie for first with two players tied for fourth one shot back, the Clovis resident improved from his opening round 75 and fired a 73 for a 148, four-over-par total to take home top prize. Heetae Yang of Pleasanton finished second at 150 with back-to-back rounds of 75, while three players tied for third place at 152. After a scorecard playoff with Ian Gilligan and Drake Jones, Anthony Georgouses of Fresno took home the third place medal, with rounds of 75 and 77.
Iqbal of San Jose won the girls championship flight by a margin of four strokes with a 36-hole score of 148. Iqbal had back-to-back rounds of 74 and feasted off pars over the two rounds making 26 to go along with three birdies and seven bogeys. Two players tied for second place at 152, eight-over-par, Jasmine Hsu of Fremont and Jordan Keyser of Ahwahnee, with Keyser being awarded the second place medal determined by a scorecard playoff. The hometown girl fired the low final round in the flight, following her opening round 79 with a one-over-par 73, while Hsu had matching rounds of 76.
Similar to the girls championship flight, the winner of the girls first flight also won by a margin of four strokes. Torres of Fresno fired a two-round total of 156, which consisted of rounds of 79 and 77. Torres beat out to other Fresno residents for top prize as Allyson Musser and Madison Nii finished in second and third, respectively. Musser finished 36 holes at 160 with rounds of 81 and 79, while Nii, who shared the first-round lead with Torres, followed her opening round 79 with an 83 to finish at 162.
