NCGA East Bay Zone Championship
July 1, 2014
Diablo Country Club had a great day in the valley to come from behind and nab first place.
Diablo CC shot a final round 15-under 125 to finish at 33-under 251 and win the NCGA Easy Bay Zone Championship on Tuesday at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Club. Finishing in second at 253 was Sequoyah CC.
Both squads earned berths into this year’s NCGA Zone Championship, slated for August 25-26 at Poppy Hills Golf Course and Spyglass Hill.
The Diablo CC squad, which had entered the final round a stroke off the lead, had five eagles and six birdies with just one bogey in a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team.
On Monday at par-72 Del Monte GC in Monterey, the Diablo CC team–made up of John Dwyer, Robert Tomczak, Christopher Harney and Tom Schmitz–posted five eagles and seven birdies with two bogeys.
Also making a second round charge was Sequoyah CC. The Sequoyah CC team, comprised of James Rector, Ed Deavila, Carl Phippin and Stuart Eberstein, was solid both days. At the Ranch they’d card three eagles and eight birdies. A day earlier at Del Monte, the team posted four eagles and six birdies.
Summitpointe CC, who took the first round lead with a 19-under 125 at Del Monte, could only muster an 11-under 129 at the Ranch, dropping them into a third place finish. The Summitpointe CC team, made up of Jon Carone, Mark Wesson, Dante Estores and Joel Tyrus, was stung by four bogeys at the Ranch.
Finishing in a tie for fourth at 256 were Spring Valley GC (Frank Loebig, Mike Tomaselli, Tom Smith and Joel Traina) and Willow Park GC (Al Tui, Joe Johnson, Brady Deitrick and Michael Desanto).
Spring Valley GC had a final round 127, while Willow Park GC shot 128.
