Lincoln Hills Golf Club came storming back and took the title.
Lincoln Hills GC posted a final round 19-under 125 and defeated Serrano Country Club on the first hole of a sudden death playoff Tuesday to win the NCGA East Sacramento Zone Championship at historic par-72 Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey.
Coming into the final round, Lincoln Hills GC, made up of Jess Linville, Walter Burke, Bill Bowen and Denis Neimeyer, had trailed first round leader Serrano CC by three. The group from Lincoln Hills GC made up the difference at Del Monte, however, putting together a final round that included six eagles, seven birdies and four pars to go with a long bogey on the par-5 17th.
They’d finish the event, which featured a first round at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch on Monday and uses a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team, with a two-day total of 38-under 246.
“It was a worthwhile trip,” said a smiling Burke. “We enjoyed the area and got in some golf on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula.”
Serrano CC, who was in control following an opening 22-under 118 at the Ranch, slipped with a 16-under 128 at Del Monte. The Serrano four, comprised of Ben Polley, Adam Hieb, Eric Brandt and Tim Melton, had four eagles, seven birdies and six pars to go with their own bogey on the 17th.
While Serrano CC lost the East Sacramento Zone crown, both teams guaranteed themselves spots in the 48th annual NCGA Zone Championship, to be held August 25-26 at Poppy Hills Golf Course and Spyglass Hill.
“It’s always exciting for a chance to play Spyglass Hill. We’re thrilled,” Burke said.
Finishing alone in third was Whitney Oaks Golf Club.
The Whitney Oaks GC squad, made up of Tom Fletcher, Vince O’Connor, David Baker and Gary White, had a day low 21-under 123 to finish four strokes behind the leaders.
Whitney Oaks’ charge was made possible thanks to a flawless round that featured eight eagles, five birdies and five pars.

Serrano Country Club holds a slim lead after day one of the NCGA East Sacramento Zone Championship.
Serrano CC shot 22-under 118 Monday at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch, good enough to take a two stroke lead over Cherry Island GC in the East Sacramento Zone Championship.
The Serrano CC squad, made up of Ben Polley, Adam Hieb, Eric Brandt and Tim Melton, was solid all day, posting six eagles, seven birdies and five pars in a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team.
Cherry Island GC, comprised of Michael Marsh, Khounkam Ngaophasy, Michael Shull and Bryce Schimmel, had eight eagles, five birdies and four pars to apply some heat to Serrano, but the group was slowed by a bogey on the par-3 16th. They’d finish at 20-under 120.
At three behind the leader is Lincoln Hills Golf Course. Lincoln Hills GC, made up of Jess Linville, Walter Burke, Bill Bowen and Denis Niemeyer, posted a 121 that featured eight eagles, three birdies and six pars. They too could have gone lower but were tripped up by a critical double-bogey on the par-3 13th.
Four behind at 122 is Rocklin Golf Course. The Rocklin GC squad, comprised of Ken Thomas, Henry Bermudez, Steve Justice and Steven Messer, had the same fate as Lincoln Hills. Rocklin GC carded six eagles, seven birdies and four pars but lost ground with a double-bogey on the par-3 13th.
The two low teams following Tuesday’s second round at par-72 Del Monte Golf Course will advance to the 48th annual NCGA Zone Championship, slated to tee off August 25-26 at Poppy Hills Golf Course and Spyglass Hill.
Last year, Sunset Whitney GC won the East Sacramento Zone title, with Lincoln Hills GC finishing as runner-up.
