NCGA South Coast Zone Championship
July 1, 2014
Dairy Creek Golf Course made it wire-to-wire, winning by eight shots, while Atascadero GC staged a rally to capture second place.
Dairy Creek GC shot 23-under 121, its second straight 121, to finish at 42-under and win the NCGA South Coast Zone title on Tuesday at par-72 Del Monte Golf Course. Atascadero GC, which came into the second round six strokes off the lead, shot 123 to finish second at 34-under 250.
Both teams advanced to the upcoming NCGA Zone Championship, to be held August 25-26 at Poppy Hills GC and Spyglass Hill.
The Dairy Creek GC squad, made up of Greg Dzuba, Nick Taylor, Dan Miller and Chris Eppright, had seven eagles and eight birdies at Del Monte, a day after posting seven eagles and four birdies at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch. Dairy Creek GC even had a bogey on Del Monte’s par-4 8th, but that hardly slowed them from walking away with the title.
While Dairy Creek GC was in cruise control, Atascadero GC had to play leapfrog to garner second place. The Atascadero GC squad, comprised of Clayton Davis, Rich Enger, Jack Delore and David Payne, posted nine eagles with three birdies and a bogey. In the first round at Carmel Valley Ranch, Atascadero got its share of eagles and birdies, but they also tripped with two bogeys and a critical double-bogey.
Rancho Canada Golf Club made a push, shooting a 17-under 127, to finish tied for third at 252 with Paso Robles GC.
The Rancho Canada GC team, made up of Ed Watts, Ken Heinly, Todd Coelho and Mark Swenson, made its second round charge with five eagles and six birdies to go with just one bogey.
Paso Robles GC, who had entered the day tied for second place, had a 14-under 130. The Paso Robles GC team, made up of Bill Wachtel, Kurt Goetz, Mike Molina and David Molina, again had six eagles and four birdies but they also had a double-bogey on the par-4 11th.

Dairy Creek Golf Course of San Luis Obispo is on top, but there’s a pair of team right on its heels.
Dairy Creek GC, made up of teammates Greg Dzuba, Nick Taylor, Dan Miller and Chris Eppright, took the lead in the NCGA South Coast Zone Championship on Monday, carding a 19-under 121 at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Club.
The Dairy Creek GC squad was flawless, penciling in seven eagles and four birdies with no bogeys in a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team.
Tied for second at 122, just a stroke behind the leader, is Paso Robles GC and The Links at Paso Robles GC.
Paso Robles GC, comprised of Bill Wachtel, Kurt Goetz, Mike Molina and David Molina, posted six eagles and four birdies but also a bogey on the par-4 2nd.
The Links at Paso Robles GC, made up of teammates Brandon Hinrichs, Jake Hinrichs, Colton Imming and Charlie Zinn, had five eagles and seven birdies but the group also bogeyed the par-3 13th.
Alone in fourth place is Rancho Canada Golf Club (Ed Watts, Ken Heinly, Todd Coelho and Mark Swenson) at 125.
In fifth place, five behind at 126, is Spring Hills GC (Steve Henneuse, Stacy Brown, Ruben Pina and Johnny Espinoza).
Tuesday’s second round will be held at par-72 Del Monte GC in Monterey.
The two low teams will advance to this year’s NCGA Zone Championship, slated for August 25-26 at Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hill.
