The South Valley Zone Championship became a two horse race.

Tulare Golf Club came back from two strokes, shooting a 20-under 120 at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch on Friday, to overcome first round leader Riverbend Golf Club and win the South Valley Zone Championship.

The good news for Riverbend is that while it lost the title, both teams earned automatic spots into this year’s NCGA Zone Championship, slated for August 25-26 at Poppy Hills Golf Course and Spyglass Hill.

Tulare GC, made up of Benji Jasmann, Roland Jasmann, Ike Cota and Gilbert Nunes, made its run to the top by carding seven eagles and seven birdies. They’d shoot low enough to overcome a critical double-bogey on the par-4 17th.

On Thursday at par-72 Del Monte Golf Course, Tulare GC had posted a 20-under 124 with eight eagles and four birdies.

Riverbend GC, which had opened with a first round 22-under 122. slipped just enough with a 16-under 124 at Carmel Valley Ranch to open the door for Tulare GC to sneak in.

The Riverbend squad, made up of Reino Siipola, Eddie Zahariades, Luis Martinez and Tim Schinner, had six eagles and six birdies. The big difference in the second was a pair of bogeys coming on No.2 and No.16 and a crucial double-bogey on the par-3 13th.

Placing third at 251, seven strokes behind the winners, was Valley Oaks Golf Club.
