CIF Boys State Championship

June 4, 2014

Justin Suh, a junior at  Evergreen Valley High in San Jose, can call himself a state champion.

Suh, the 2013 Junior Tour of Northern California Player of the Year, won the Individual title at Wednesday’s CIF State Boys’ Golf Championship at par-71 San Gabriel Country Club in San Gabriel, posting an 18-hole score of 4-under 67. Westlake High of Westlake Village won the team title by nine strokes over co-runner ups Dublin and Rancho Bernardo.

Suh, who has already committed to USC, had six birdies and a bogey on his round. He’d start off hot, bagging birdies on three of his first four holes.

It’s the second feather in the JTNC cap this week. On Monday, JTNC alum Maverick McNealy, who now plays at Stanford, qualified for the U.S. Open while competing in a 36-hole Sectional at Lake Merced GC and the Olympic Club.

Jimmy Castles of Bellarmine High (San Jose), also a JTNC member, finished tied for second in the Individual portion of the championship with Rio Mesa’s Victor Ponte at 68. Will Brueckner of Acalanes High (Lafayette), who was medalist at the NCGA/CIF Northern California finals, finished tied for fourth at 70.

Other Northern California individuals (and players with JTNC ties) who finished in the top 20 in the championship were Joshua McCarthy of Concord’s De La Salle High (73, T-16) and Pleasant Valley’s Noah Norton (73, T-16). McCarthy currently holds the No.1 spot on the JTNC points list.

Jeffrey Inouye-Wong of Granite Bay shot 74 (T-21), while¬†Derek Ackerman of Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton) shot 76 (T-29). Both Jack Burlison of Palma (Salinas) and Jim Coon of Campolindo had 81′s to finish tied for 45th, and Derek Ackerman of Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton) shot 76 (T-29).

The team title went to Southern California’s Westlake High with a score of 7-over 362 in a format that takes the best five scores out of six players. The Warriors had three players–Jack Biwer, Spencer Soosman and Matthew Wolff–come in at 1-under 70.

Only two of the other five teams in the championship had at least one player shoot under par. Fellow JTNC members Jacob Solomon of Dublin High and Tanner Hughes of Foothill (Pleasanton) also carded 70′s.

Dublin High, which had finished third at NorCals, tied for second in the team championship at 16-over 371. Other scores for the Gaels were Chris Larsen (71), Justin Choi (74), Hayden Hui (78), Rei Echizenya (78) and William Choi (82).

Foothill High, who won their record sixth NorCal title, finished fourth at 20-over 375. Other scores for the Falcons were Ryan Knop (74), Ryan Maund (77), Alex Chin (77), John Fracisco (77) and Raj Chekuri (78).
