Strong Gaels — Marr Bests Teammate at Windy Silicon Valley Amateur
Jan. 13, 2014
St. Mary’s sophomore Mac Marr shot 142 (70-72) to win this past weekend’s amateurgolf.com Silicon Valley Amateur in what was a blustery and fast Coyote Creek Golf Course.
But is it a surprise a Gael would prevail in such strong gales?
Marr defeated fellow Gaels teammate Cody Robinson by five. Robinson had entered Sunday’s final round tied with Marr for the lead. St. Mary’s players dominating Northern California events is nothing new. Two-time NCGA Player of the Year (2012, 2013) Ben Geyer, who won the NCGA Amateur Stroke Play titles in both 2012 and 2013, also played at St. Mary’s. And then there’s Gaels head coach Scott Hardy, who has won two Amateur Stroke Play Championship titles (2004,2011).
Three players, including Monterey resident Sunny Yan, tied for third at 150.
Due to high winds and dry conditions, some of Coyote Creek’s greens were running as fast as 15 on the stimpmeter.
In the Senior portion of the championship, 2013 amateurgolf.com Player of the Year Mark Miller shot a final round 79 to come from behind and win by one over Mike Parnow.
