It was icing on the cake for San Jose resident Sabrina Iqbal.
Last Friday, Iqbal wrapped up not only the Junior Tour of Northern California Tour Championship title, but also JTNC Girls’ Player of the Year honors.
Iqbal, a 13-year-old freshman at Pioneer High, finished the 2013-2014 JTNC season with a whopping 4,003 points, outdistancing runner-up Nealimi Yoh of Concord (2,875) by over 1,000 points.
During the season, Iqbal, whose father Shaheen is a PGA teaching professional at The Villages Golf and Country Club in Silicon Valley, racked up nine victories and three second place finishes.
“I just go out and try to shoot as low as I can,” said Iqbal, whose favorite player is Stacy Lewis. “My goal is to get a scholarship for college.”
While he didn’t compete in the season ending Tour Championship, Joshua McCarthy of Danville secured JTNC Boys’ Player of the Year honors, finishing the season with 2,852 points earned in 15 events.
Justin Suh of San Jose, winner of this year’s NCGA Junior Championship, finished second with 2,689 points.
McCarthy, a sophomore at De La Salle High in Concord, won five events with four runner-up finishes.
The 2014-2015 JTNC season, sponsored by Capital Insurance Group (CIG), will kick off with the Fall Series I Championship, to be held August 16-17 at Sierra Meadows Country Club in Ahwahnee.
