SEASIDE - The 3rd Annual Northern California Women’s Four-Ball Net Championship was held at Black Horse GC and produced winners in each of the three handicap divisions — Chardonnay (for low handicaps), Merlot (for mid handicaps) and Zinfandel (for higher handicap players).
The tournament is unique in that it brings together female competitors from three associations in the region – the Northern California Golf Association, the Women’s Golf Association of Northern California and the Pacific Women’s Golf Association.
In the Chardonnay flight, overnight leaders Stephanie Ballato of Las Positas and Leslie Voegtly of Sandia Tourney captured the flight after following up a first-round net seven-under-par 65 with a 71 on the final day. The pair secured the title by three strokes with an eight-under-par 136 total.
The Sonoma CC duo Ellen Bradley and Noreen Feig took second place at 139 after carding a final-round even-par 72. Two teams tied for third at four-under-par 140 — Kay Robinson and Cindy Young of Windsor fired a net 68 and Fountain Grove’s Stacey Camara and Sue Thompson posted a 71 in the final round.
Marin CC’s Patricia Albo and Myrna DeMartino claimed the Merlot flight. The team fired 67-72 to finish at net five-under-par 139 which was good enough for a three stroke victory over the division.
The Aligent Technologies team of Lynne Houghton and Belinda Kendle carded a five-under-par 67 on day one and nabbed the runner-up spot after a card-off for second place ties. Vivian French from Airways GC and Diane Pookie Mansker from River Creek tied with the Aligent team at two-under-par 141 and took third.
In the Zinfandel flight, Oakmont’s Laura Bellows and Mayacama’s Malin Giddings followed up a first-round net eight-under-par 64 with a 67 to secure the title. The duo finished at net 13-under-par and five strokes clear of the runner-up finishers. Sharon Fogel of Greenbrae and Lisa Smith of Indian Valley charged up the leaderboard with a final round seven-under 65 to take second place at eight-under-par 136, while Mountain Hough’s Jennifer Dyrr and Marjorie Joseph took third with five-under-par 139.
Next year’s championship will be held at Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley.
