The NCGA first involvement with junior golf began in 1930 when the NCGA Junior Championship was first conducted for boys. In 1982, a Girls championship was started. Later the NCGA began to help the California Interscholastic Federation conduct their Northern California and State championships. In 2007, the NCGA partnered with the Junior Golf Association of Northern California to conduct a tournament known as the Northern California Junior Players Championship.
In 2007, the decision was made to increase the opportunities for junior golfers in Northern California. At that time John Vander Borght and Tony Yick were hired to create the NCGA Junior Tour. The decision was made to focus on the spring and fall the first few years. The NCGA Board of Directors set forth the guidelines that the tournaments be open to all levels of ability and that the price be kept affordable. In 2008, 8 tournaments were held with 3 in the spring and 5 in the fall. The first tournament was held at Poppy Hills Golf Course in March 2008.
The demand was immediately obvious as the tournaments sold how and had substantial waiting lists. In 2008, the play was conducted in age groups. The final tournament of the year was a Tour Championship at which time Austin Roberts and Tiffany Lim were crowned as Players of the Year. Christopher Petefish was named the Player of the Year in the 12-13 year old category.
For 2009, the number of tournaments was increased to 12. After looking at the varying skill levels at all ages, the decision was made to move away from the traditional age groups and flight players by skill level. Accordingly players were required to establish handicaps. There were two flights for boys and two for girls. Players with handicap indexes of 7.4 or lower played in the Championship flight while those with indexes of 7.5 or higher played in the First flight. Because all the players had handicaps, net medals were handed out along with the traditional gross medals.
We feel that the change to using handicaps to flight players has resulted in much more interesting and equitable competitions. Players who are advanced for their age can play on longer courses with players of similar skills, while those who might have taken up the game or not developed as quickly can play shorter courses with others of equal ability.
After the Tour Championship in 2009, the players of the year were Shotaro Ban and Hannah Suh. Both had won multiple tournaments during the year and exhibited consistent play.
In 2010, the NCGA Junior Tour has expanded to 16 tournaments with 5 being held in the spring, 6 in the fall and for the first time, 5 in the summer.
