What is the NCGA Junior Tour?

The NCGA Junior Tour is a series of competitions for junior golfers.  It was started in 2008 with the purpose of providing an opportunity for junior golfers who are members of the Northern California Golf Association to play in tournaments that are run with the quality and professionalism of all NCGA tournaments for an affordable price.

Who can play on the NCGA Junior Tour?

To play in an NCGA Junior Tour tournament you must meet the following requirements:
• Be a member of the NCGA
• Have an established Handicap Index at the time of entry into the tournament (See Handicaps And You)
• Be 18 or younger
• Have not started college

Before you decide to play on the NCGA Junior Tour, be aware that we usually play courses that are between 6300-700o yards for the Boys Championship Flight, 5800-6500 for the Boys First Flight, 5700-6300 for the Girls Championship Flight and 5000-5500 for the Girls First Flight.  Some younger players may not be ready for courses this long so it is recommended that you wait until you think you can handle this.

How are tournaments organized?

Tournaments are 36 holes over two days.  Our preferred model for tournaments is to have the first 18 in the afternoon and the second 18 in the morning.  This way, families can travel and play on the same day and save travel costs.  This is not always possible due to the needs of the golf courses that are providing us their facilities at reduced rates.  When the course has a driving range, range balls are also included.  Lunches may be provided at selected events.

How are flights decided?

The Championship Flights are for players who have Handicap Indexes of 7.4 or lower.  The First Flight is for those who have Handicap Indexes of 7.5 or higher.  Your Handicap Index at the time of registration is what will determine which flight you are in.  If it changes before the tournament, you will not be moved to the other flight.  This is because we don’t want to mix players in different flights in the same group as they are playing different tees and it could cause confusion.

What does it cost?

The cost is $75 for each tournament.  There is no membership cost beyond the cost of an NCGA membership.

How do I sign up for tournaments?

If you have not signed up for an NCGA tournament in 2010, you will need to setup an account first.  To do this go to the create an account page and click on the Click Here to Register link under New Users.   Once you have created your account, you will get an e-mail that confirms things are setup.   After that, you can log in here.  You will see a list of tournaments.  To narrow the list, select the appropriate Season (2010 NCGA Junior Tournaments) from the dropdown list.  Any tournament that is open to you will have a small box next to the name.  To register, check the box(es) and then go back to the top of the screen and click on the “Register for Selected Events” button at the top.

Why does the registration site not let me register on Friday?

General registration usually opens on Monday mornings at 8AM unless Monday is a holiday in which case it will open on Tuesday at 8AM.  But, there is a registration period that lasts from the Friday before through Sunday evening.  This registration period is for players who have won a tournament in the previous 365 days.  By winning, the earn the right to pre-register.  Between Friday and Sunday, they will see the registration box next to the tournament, but others won’t.  Unfortunately the registration dates on the system will reflect this period until Sunday night.

How is the field selected for a tournament?

In general the field is set on a first-come / first-serve basis unless it fills in the first 24 hours.  If that is the case, half the field is selected first-come / first-serve while the other half is selected from a random draw of the players who entered in the first 24 hours.  To learn more details you can read this article.

How do I become an NCGA member?

Membership in the NCGA is arranged through a golf club.  There are many different kinds of golf clubs: public; private; associate (groups of people such as co-workers or friends); and eClubs.  You can learn more about these clubs at the NCGA membership page.  The best thing you can do is join the NCGA Youth on Course program.  See the NCGA Foundation website for more information.  You should join a club as soon as possible so that you can post at least 5 scores and get a handicap.

How do I find out my tee time?

The first round tee times and other information will be published on the NCGA website at Tournament Central  approximately 7-10 days before the tournament.  An e-mail will be sent to all registered players at that time.  You should always read all the information carefully.  Second round tee times will be published on the Tournament Central page as soon as they are complete after the first round.  They will also be given to the pro shop so that you can call them.  A handout will be available at scoring on the first day with the number and time to call.

I’m on the waiting list, how can I find out my status?

By going to the tournament information you can see who is in the tournament as well as the wait list.  Wait lists are managed independently for each flight.  Each Wait List is shown in the order that players are on the list.  Click on the Participants link on the right of the tournament’s entry in the schedule.  Once you are there, select the appropirate Division from the list at the top.

If a player from your flight withdraws and you are the first person on the wait list for that flight, you will be notified that you are in the tournament.  If the tournament is still open for entries when the withdrawal happens, we will move you directly into the tournament.  If entries have closed, we will contact you and see if you still want to play.  Please let us know as soon as possible as there are usually others on the lists who do want to play.

How do I withdraw from a tournament?

You can withdraw yourself up until the deadline for withdrawals which is usually a week before the tournament.  Log into the system and click on the withdraw link next to the tournament in question.  If that link is not there, you will need to contact us directly.  If you withdraw before the tournament closes, you will be charged $10.  If the tournament is closed and you withdraw outside of 48 hours before the tournament, you will get 50% of your entry fee back.  If it is within 48 hours, there is no refund.

If you need to withdraw from the tournament during the last week, please call the NCGA offices at 831-625-4653.

If you have to withdraw on the day before the tournament or later, please call the NCGA offices at 831-625-4653 and also e-mail John Vander Borght and Tony Yick.   Calling the golf course is not sufficient.

Can a Junior accept financial assistance?

The USGA has a paper on their website that describes the rules for financial assistance for juniors.  This only covers things from the USGA’s Amateur status rules.  You should also check with the NCAA to see what rules they might have regarding juniors accepting assistance.
