PEBBLE BEACH – The inaugural Senior Match Play Championship began Wednesday with spirited competition from the 16-player, invitational field.
Drawn from the ranks of the NCGA Senior Points’ List, the new event featured two rounds of match play today. The semifinals are scheduled for tomorrow with the finals set for Friday.
The #1 seed, Mark Miller of Lone Tree, was the lone upset in the afternoon’s quarterfinals. Miller was defeated by NCGA Senior Champion Bill Bowen (right) of the Lincoln Hills Club 5 and 4.
The other top players played up to their seeding as Rob Thompson of Merced (#2 seed) defeated Tom Lyons of Castlewood 2 and 1. Thompson will face Shelton Washburn of the Meadow Club (the #3 seed) in the semifinals. Washburn earned his place in the final four via a 6 and 5 victory over Jay Guerin of Alameda in the quarterfinals.
The other spot in the semifinals was earned by San Francisco City champion Carl Selkirk of Butte Creek, who defeated Frank Abbott of Silverado in a tight match, 1-up.
