U.S. Women’s Open Sectional Qualifying

Lake Merced GC June 11

DALY CITY – After 36 holes of sectional qualifying, Northern California sent 11 contestants to the U.S. Women’s Open, to be played June 28 – July 1 at Pine Needles in North Carolina. Medalist Mina Harigae qualified for her first U.S. Women’s Open. The rising senior at the Robert Louis Stevenson school in Pebble Beach fired a 36-hole score of three-over 147 on the par-72, 6,470-yard Lake Merced GC. The Monterey resident broke her driver midway through her first round of qualifying but was able to replace the club and turn in a three-over 75 in the afternoon. “It was kind of a hectic round,” the 17-year-old said in reference to her first 18 holes, “but I am very happy to qualify.” Harigae is ranked #2 in the national Golfweek junior rankings, has won multiple California Women’s Amateur championships, has qualified for multiple USGA championships and has verbally committed to attend women’s golf national champion Duke University in 2008. Qualifying for the Open completes the resume of one of the top female amateur golfers in the nation. Other qualifiers include Pleasanton Golf Center teaching professional Dana Dormann. The assistant coach at San Jose State played the LPGA Tour for several years and is headed back for her 14th Open after making the cut in the event last year. University of Southern California-bound Joanne Lee is making her second consecutive trip to the Open. Lee, 18, is a former NCGA Junior Girls champion.
