Purdue Wins Western Intercollegiate Men’s Golf; Xavier’s John Streibich Ties Two Tournament Records

SANTA CRUZ: John Streibich of Xavier University tied two tournament records to capture individual honors and Purdue University posted a 15-stroke victory at the 61st Western Intercollegiate.

Streibich, from St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, shot a final-round, seven-under-par 63 and finished with an 11-under-par 199 total for 54 holes over the par 70, 6.432-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. His final round featured a hole-in-one on the par 3, 194-yard 5th hole and tied a record first set by 1964 U.S. Open champion and former CBS-TV golf commentator Ken Venturi, who played for San Jose State in the 1950s, as well as Bryan Pini of the University of the Pacific, and Jason Allred of Pepperdine University. Streibich, who won for the first time in college competition, also tied Allred’s tournament record for a 54-hole score.

“My first hole-in-one was when I was 15,” said Streibich, who realized he aced the hole from the roar of the crowd behind the green.

Purdue captured its first team title of the 2006-07 season with an 849 total. The Boilermakers took a two-stroke lead into the final round and with a 287 team score easily finished ahead of the 18-team field. California moved from seventh to second with a 288 for an 864 total. Fresno State was third at 866. Washington at 867 and San Diego and Long Beach State at 868 rounded out the top six teams. Host San Jose State was 17th at 905. Freshman Stephan Stallworth was the top Spartan individual tying for 13th at 214. Only five players in the 96-man field finished with an under par score of 209 or better.
