RICHMOND COUNTRY CLUB, RICHMOND, CA
May 19, 2008
RICHMOND – In blustery conditions at Richmond CC, Daniel Semmler fired a two-under par 68 to claim the CIF/NCGA High School Boys’ Championship, while Rocklin High School secured the team honors.
In a round that included hitting 16 of 18 greens in regulation, Semmler made five birdies on the 6,203-yard, par-70 course to edge out four other players who were one-stroke back. Semmler stayed cool under pressure, “I heard someone say on the 17th hole that 69 was the leading score in the clubhouse. I knew I just had to par my way in.”
Alex Johnson from Cardinal Newman, Kyle Chatelain from Rocklin, Jay Meyers from Branham and Sacramento Waldorf’s Austin Roberts all tied for runner-up honors with 69. The top six individuals not already on a qualifying team move on to the State Championship to be played at Santa Maria CC on June 3. Individual qualifiers include: Daniel Semmler (Carlmont), Jay Meyers (Branham), Austin Roberts (Sacramento Waldorf), Cory McElyea (Harbor), Ryan Corbett (Monte Vista) and Sam Smith (Turlock).
Rocklin HS claimed the team title with 19-over-par 369, three-strokes clear of runner-up team Cardinal Newman. Rocklin was led by two senior players Kyle Chatelain and Nick Brown who paved the way with 70 and 73 respectively. Team coach Dave Stewart was “exceptionally proud,” with his team result, “the key was our number five guy shot a 77 today,” he said.
Palma HS of Salinas finished ten strokes out of first place on 379, in the format that takes the lowest five of six scores. All three teams advance to the State Championship.
