PEBBLE BEACH – The Churn Creek team of Steve Beaton, Craig Burkett, Joe Watson and Mike Haworth captured the NCGA North Zone Championship at Poppy Hills.
Churn Creek came from behind in the final round, carding a net 23-under-par 121 for a 31-under 257 in the format that takes the best two of four net scores per hole. Churn Creek upended first-round leaders Lava Creek (Don Shuler, Kerry Kennedy, Jim Palmer and Terry Johnson) who finished three strokes behind the champions.
Tierra Oaks’ Roe Ballard, Charles Pasalich, Joe Ballard and David Degan finished third, five strokes back of the champions.
Churn Creek and Lava Creek qualify for the Zone Championship, to be played at Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hill August 25-26.
