| The program (up to 13 months) trains qualified and motivated individuals in the basic skills needed for a career in golf course management.
To enter the post-graduate, paid program, candidates must have a two-year degree/certificate. A four-year degree is preferred. Course work must include agronomy, horticulture or turf management. Two years of prior work experience on a golf course is highly recommended.
Much of the success of the program is due to the on-the-job training format. Participants utilize curriculum which contains 8 Areas of Emphasis to guide them through the program. Several of these areas include Irrigation & Water Use Efficiencies, Equipment Operation & Maintenance, and Special Event/Tournament Preparation.
Throughout the program, participants are encouraged to participate in a variety of special events. Recently, participants worked at Harding Park in San Francisco to prepare the course for the President’s Cup. Other events include the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, First Tee Open at Pebble Beach and the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
The NCGA and host courses supports candidate participation at regional educational meetings as well as NCGA sponsored events such as a Rules of Golf workshop and the Assistant Superintendent Boot Camp. Participants can receive financial assistance for conference and educational expenses during their tenure in the program.
