The Northern California Golf Association Superintendent Training Program is designed to prepare highly motivated individuals in all aspects of golf course maintenance. Through the completion of eight Areas of Emphasis along with a multitude of networking opportunities this program prides itself on being the greatest building block to establishing a promising career. The participant will represent the NCGA in a professional demeanor through job performance as well as appearance. Upon acceptance to the program, each participant will be placed at host site in Northern California which is highly recognizable and respected throughout the golf industry for 13 months.

  • Equipment Operation & Maintenance
  • Agronomic Principles & Practices
  • Irrigation & Water Use Efficiencies
  • Budgeting & Managerial Strategies
  • Small & Large Scale Course Projects
  • Natural Resource Stewardship
  • Special Event/Tournament Preparation

The participant will maintain an electronic template which will describe their progress for each area of emphasis. A portfolio documenting all program achievements is required upon completion of the program.

The participant will be eligible to receive financial assistance for conference and educational expenses. The NCGA encourages participants to attend regional professional meetings as well as several NCGA sponsored events such as the Rules of Golf workshop and the Assistant Superintendent Boot Camp. These opportunities are significant for networking and career development.

Candidate Qualifications

Educational Requirements

Must have a two-year degree or certificate. A four-year degree is preferred. Course work should include classes in turf management, horticulture or agronomy.

Work Experience

Two years of golf course experience or similar type of outside work history (i.e. landscaping, irrigation installation, etc.)

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform manual labor including the ability to lift 50 pounds.

Attributes

Flexibility! Needs to do whatever it takes to get the job done right the first time.

Professional Conduct

Maintain a professional demeanor as a representative of the host site and the Northern California Golf Association at all times.

Golf Awareness

Should be able to play and understand the game of golf.

Interview

Finalists will be invited to participate in interviews at the host facilities as schedules permit. Air fare and overnight hotel accommodations will be provided by the NCGA. Interviews will be scheduled as qualified candidates are identified.

Final Selections

Candidates will be notified within one week if they have been selected to participate in the Superintendent Training Program.
